About the Opportunity

Staffordshire Police are seeking exceptional individuals with a proven background in IT Architectureorextensive hands-on experience in software development, network administration, infrastructure or information technology.

The role

As Architect, your role will be involved during the planning, design, development and documentation of solutions, developing the related architectural documentation (Decision Papers, High Level Designs, Roadmaps). You will be a key influencer in respect of digital strategy, planning, assurance and standard-setting, both internally with key stakeholders and externally in driving maximum value from strategic supplier relationships.

You will contribute to the governance of IT solution design, maintaining and setting the overall Enterprise Architecture for the force and ensuring that all work undertaken adheres to agreed standards (National and Local), design principles and architecture methodology. You will be part of the Technical Design Authority (TDA) that is responsible for assessing and selecting appropriate technologies to service organisational needs.

Reporting into the Lead Architect, you and the Architecture team will be responsible for understanding the current and future requirements for the force, creating roadmaps, setting strategy, and as a result identifying opportunities for leveraging information and digital technology.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Solution design for software and supporting infrastructure
  • Contribution to the impact assessment process to provide SME input on proposed initiatives and providing high level cost estimates for implementation
  • Reviewing new or changed legislation and its impact on adopted force technology standards
  • Using architecture to guide and align programme solutions to improve coherence, re-use and integration providing increased efficiency and business effectiveness
  • Ensuring that programmes and projects deliver the right technology components, integrated in the right way to provide the intended benefits; considering the re-use of existing investment in technology or services and ensuring that functionality is not duplicated
  • Presentation of architecture outputs to stakeholders at various levels of technical understanding within the force
  • Defining, managing and governing infrastructure standards and capabilities for the deployment of business, data, and application services
  • Engaging with stakeholders to define and promote suitable technology solutions
  • Actively participating as a member of the Technical Design Authority
  • Maintaining an awareness of appropriate commercial and technical developments to allow advice to be given on providing future IT & Digital solutions

About you:


You will possess both strong technical and interpersonal skills to design, describe and manage solutions. You will have experience in evaluating the existing environment and working out how different elements of business, data, applications and technology can be applied to solve a problem.

You will need strong, demonstrable experience in working with software design, programming languages, networks and infrastructure. You will also need to be able to implement and manage services offered by external vendors.

You will need excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills to convey complex solutions to all key stakeholders, both technical and business-focused.

You will also be able to commute to Staffordshire Police HQ in Stafford within 90 minutes due to the importance of operational availability.
