Job description

Situated in the beautiful Wye Valley, Hook Mason Limited is a long established award-winning architectural practice undertaking contemporary, historic and conservation projects. The team comprises a mix of age and experience with both architects and architectural technologists.

With over 55 years of history, Hook Mason is seeking an experienced Architect or Architectural Technologist with enthusiasm for working on the conservation and creative transformation of historic buildings. You’ll join a passionate team delivering full design and project support from concept through to completion. With the opportunity to manage your own projects and liaise directly with clients, you’ll work on everything from listed buildings to contemporary new build projects in the private, commercial and ecclesiastical sectors. You will be well organised, able to work to deadlines, and confident in liaising directly with clients.

Candidates must ensure the highest design quality throughout all projects and be able to work efficiently and diligently to meet deadlines whilst maintaining a strong attention to detail and maintaining high standards of work. Candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, however, we are ideally keen to hear from anyone with a background in the architectural heritage, conservation or ecclesiastical sector.

A sound appreciation of architectural history and a good knowledge of traditional construction methods and repair techniques are essential. We contract administer many projects on site and we needs skills that adopt a very practical approach to construction.

It is essential that you are fully conversant with UK planning, listed building and building regulations and can demonstrate experience in preparing the relevant local authority applications and dealing with conditions.

You will be proficient in AutoCAD, SketchUp and ArchiCAD, producing 2D architectural drawings and 3D visualisations, rendering software packages and have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software. We would expect several years’ experience in running projects.

Salary negotiable depending on experience.

Key Skill / Experience Requirements:

  • RIBA Part 3 Qualified and ARB registration / MCIAT accredited
  • Degree qualified with 5+ years’ post–qualification experience
  • Proven track record managing projects through all RIBA stages 1 to 7
  • A keen interest in traditional buildings and creative reuse of historic sites
  • The ability to undertake projects from inception through to completion
  • Excellent design sensibility, technical understanding and presentation skills
  • Experience in liaising with clients, consultants and construction teams
  • The ability to work autonomously, designing and delivering projects with minimal supervision
  • Providing a practical and methodical approach to solving problems, working to fixed budgets and working within deadlines
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills
  • Proficient use of AutoCAD, ArchiCAD and SketchUp alongside a range of rendering programmes
  • A strong knowledge of LPA and National Planning and Heritage Procedures and Policies
  • A knowledge of working with grant aiding bodies
  • Experience of contract administration and site experience will be required
  • A strong knowledge of detailing and Building Regulations
  • Excellent design skills and a thorough knowledge of relevant technical standards and regulations
  • Have excellent verbal and visual presentation skills and ability to explain a design idea and evolution of a concept
  • Can interrogate information from sub-contractors and sub-consultants, with an awareness of coordination issues, or design items that could impact on legislative compliance
  • Assist with formation of fee proposals for new projects, and variations for current projects
  • Show experience of managing the implications of design on health and safety
  • Have knowledge of contractual/procurement options using JCT forms of contract
  • Resolve problems and issues that arise during construction
  • Understanding of duties and responsibilities under CDM Regulations.
