Job summary

UKRI's MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology invites applications for a fixed-term research position with the Baum lab to study archaeal cell biology, growth and division in Sulfolobus and Asgard archaea.

You will collaborate with postdocs and staff, perform cell culture, prepare media, use microscopy, analyse genome data, and help produce reports and publications while ensuring compliance with safety and governance.

This post is funded until 31 December 2027 and pays £31,916 to £36,495 per annum.

Qualifications

  • Essential: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as biology, biochemistry, cell biology, engineering, evolutionary biology or molecular genetics.
  • Desirable: Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience in microbial research.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake research aimed at understanding archaeal cell biology.
  • Prepare media and passaging Asgard archaeal cultures.
  • Test the composition of mixed archaeal cultures.
  • Develop tools for live cell imaging and immunofluorescent microscopy.
  • Present information on research progress within the group and the LMB.
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the research group and manage communal reagents and facilities.
  • Contribute to production of research reports, protocols and publications.
  • Plan and manage experimental work with the supervisor and project team.
  • Ensure research is carried out with good practice, integrity and in compliance with policies.
