Job summary

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking experienced Approved Mental Health Professionals to join a dedicated Adult Mental Health AMHP Service. Qualifications

• Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England.
• AMHP qualification held.
• Experience undertaking Mental Health Act Assessments.
• Significant experience in Adult Social Care within Local Authority.
• Strong knowledge of Mental Health Act, Care Act 2014, Adult Safeguarding, Mental Capacity Act.
• Experience with complex mental health needs and crisis situations.
• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment.
• Excellent risk assessment, decision-making and crisis intervention.
• Flexible working hours including days, nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Responsibilities

• Conduct Mental Health Act Assessments per statutory requirements and best practice.
• Exercise professional judgement and legal decision-making under Mental Health legislation.
• Collaborate with psychiatrists, health colleagues, emergency services, carers and partner agencies.
• Develop and implement short-term support and risk management plans when alternatives to hospital admission are considered.
• Ensure compliance with Care Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding legislation.
• Manage crisis situations with person-centred and strengths-based approach.
• Respond to Adult Social Care referrals through the Making Safe service out of hours.
• Maintain accurate case records and documentation to professional standards.
• Contribute to delivering a high-quality 24/7 AMHP service.
• Work autonomously while receiving supervision from the AMHP Team Manager.

Role Overview

We are seeking experienced Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) to join a dedicated Adult Mental Health AMHP Service. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a specialist team responsible for delivering the local authority's statutory duties under the Mental Health Act and associated Health and Social Care legislation.

The successful candidates will undertake Mental Health Act Assessments, work collaboratively with health professionals and partner agencies, and support individuals experiencing acute mental health crises. The role requires autonomous decision-making, strong legal literacy, and a commitment to achieving positive outcomes for adults with complex mental health needs.

In addition to Mental Health Act work, the team supports the borough's Making Safe provision, acting as the primary point of contact for Adult Social Care enquiries outside normal working hours.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Requirements

• Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England.
• Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) qualification.
• Previous experience undertaking Mental Health Act Assessments.
• Significant experience working within Adult Social Care in a Local Authority setting.
