About us

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Apprentice Vehicle and Plant Mechanic within the Council's Fleet Services Department. This is a 4-year fixed-term apprenticeship, where you will learn how to service and repair the Council's varied fleet of vehicles and plant equipment, including heavy commercial trucks such as refuse collection vehicles, light commercial vehicles, agricultural tractors, large and small grounds care maintenance machinery, and handheld equipment.

The role

You will be required to complete an industry-recognised Standards/NVQ apprenticeship while working with qualified mechanics through the varying stages of your apprenticeship to gain necessary hands-on experience. Additionally, you will need to attend and complete academic studies to obtain relevant industry-recognised qualifications. Studies and training may require travel, block release, and overnight stays.

The VMU workshops operate from 6am to 10pm Monday to Thursday and from 6am to 6pm on Friday. Staff work 37 hours a week on an alternate weekly shift pattern. Only staff over 18 years of age will work the alternating shift patterns; those under 18 will work fixed daytime hours.

What’s needed?

GCSEs (Grade 4 or above) including Maths, English, and Science. Commitment to undertaking and completing an appropriate Apprenticeship Framework and Functional Skills.

Benefits

Along with a competitive salary, benefits include:

  • 26 days annual holiday, increasing to 31 after 5 years of service (pro-rata)

  • Health & Wellbeing Programme
  • Flexible working
  • Uniform and safety equipment
