The University of Birmingham Estates is responsible for both the master planning and stewardship of our extensive estate. Our team is made up of over 180 dedicated members of staff, including 10 apprentices studying Mechanical or Electrical qualifications over a 4-year scheme; all striving to deliver a world class university experience for the benefit of all students, staff, academics and visitors. After our staff, our physical estate is the largest single enabler for our world-class teaching, research and providing a fantastic student experience.
Our estate is large and varied covering 672 acres, with over 300 buildings of different ages, complexities, physical condition and use, ranging from grade 1 and 2 listed properties to brand new state of the art learning and research spaces. It consists of two main campus sites (Edgbaston & Selly Oak) along with properties in Stratford upon Avon, Ansty (near Coventry), Coniston (in Cumbria), Ironbridge and Dubai. The total gross internal area of the estate is 538,000 m2. 74% of the non-residential estate is in building condition A and B and we typically spend circa £9M on energy and water each year.
Apprenticeship summary
The Apprentice Space and Data Co-ordinator will work within the Space and Digital Estate team managing a broad range of space and data related queries and monitor and analyse space data to support space strategy and improve space utilisation.
The Space and Data Co-ordinator will support the Space Management Strategy, and the continuing development of the Estates Space database for accurate Space related analysis and reporting.
The Space and Digital Estate Team are directly responsible for the delivery and management of a number of functions. This includes
The apprentice will contribute with the wider team to support the delivery of the Estate Strategy through developing the space database and analytics. Working under the direction of the Digital Information and Data Analytics Manager, the apprentice will assist in ensuring University space data is accurate and BIM models are fit for purpose. The apprentice will learn to develop space planning materials through BIM to assist with the delivery of Space Management changes.
The apprentice will assist with developing new ways of working, informing strategy through data analysis and champion best practice through technology and systems innovation. They will assist the team with on-site visits, surveys, other data collection methods and will be responsible for creating drawn and management information and reports from University data using a range of software and systems.
