Job summary

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is offering a unique 36‑month Therapeutic Radiographer Apprenticeship in central London. You will train within the Radiotherapy Department at UCLH while studying the Level 6 BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography with the University of Hertfordshire.

The scheme embeds 80% of hours in clinical radiotherapy practice and 20% academic study, leading to HCPC registration upon completion.

Qualifications

• GCSEs including Maths and English at grade C or above.
• 3 A Levels or equivalent Level 3 qualification in science subjects (physics, biology or chemistry).
• Willingness to undertake the radiographer practitioner degree apprenticeship to gain HCPC registration.

This is a unique 36-month Therapeutic Radiographer Apprenticeship opportunity to work and train within the Radiotherapy Department at University College Hospital London, in the heart of central London. You will complete the Level 6 BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography Degree Apprenticeship with the University of Hertfordshire. The role involves direct contact with patients and their families, alongside working closely with medical, nursing, physics and wider multidisciplinary teams.

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to develop a career in Therapeutic Radiography while gaining valuable clinical experience within a leading specialist NHS service.

The University of Hertfordshire is based in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, with excellent transport links to London and the surrounding areas. The university provides a supportive and inclusive learning environment, with opportunities to develop both academically and professionally throughout the apprenticeship.

Successful applicants will be embedded within the Radiotherapy department working 80% of their hours alongside the team, and study with the University of Hertfordshire for the remainder of their time. Upon completion of the three-year course, they will gain a BSc Honours in Therapeutic Radiography and be eligible for professional registration with the HCPC. This fully funded programme allows the applicant to study and earn a wage at the same time, with extensive workplace learning and practice, supported by academic learning at the University and through distance learning, and self-study.

UCLH are looking for candidates who are flexible, adaptable and patient focussed, aiming to deliver the highest standards of clinical care. They will work alongside experienced Therapeutic Radiographers and the wider multidisciplinary team, developing skills in patient care, communication, anatomy, physiology, radiotherapy physics and radiation protection. As their knowledge and confidence develop, they will take increasing responsibility for delivering treatment safely and effectively, supported by experienced clinical staff.

The candidate will be trained to undertake a wide range of clinical experiences within Therapeutic Radiography, developing the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to deliver safe, compassionate and high-quality radiotherapy care. Training will include opportunities to work across the radiotherapy pathway, including CT simulation, treatment planning, treatment delivery and image-guided radiotherapy, as well as gaining experience with a range of specialist radiotherapy techniques and technologies.

Stage 1: Group assessment date - 28 September 2026 in the morning
Stage 2: Individual interview date - 28 September 2026 in the afternoon, if successful in the assessment stage

Knowledge and Qualifications

• 5 CGSEs grade C or above to include Maths and English (or equivalent). These will be requested before being invited to an assessment.
• University entry requirements: 3 A levels or Equivalent Level 3 qualification e.g. BTEC National Diploma or NVQ Level 3 – in science related subjects (physics, biology or chemistry)
• On entry into programme: Demonstrate a willingness to undertake the radiographer practitioner degree apprenticeship course to gain professional registration with HCPC (Failure to achieve this would result in termination of contract)
• Please note on successful completion of the three year apprenticeship programme the post holder will achieve a BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography degree.
• Apprentices whose first language is not English need to meet IELTS requirements of at least 7.0 overall and no less than 6.5 in any other section
• Good understanding of legislation relating to Health and Safety and radiation protection

Experience

• Evidence of interest in radiotherapy and its application in healthcare
