Job description

Apprentice Quantity Surveyor Role

The role of Apprentice Quantity Surveyor is to support senior commercial staff in managing costs and contracts related to projects. Responsibilities include all aspects from initial tender to final account and close-out, aiming to minimize costs and maximize value for money while maintaining standards and quality. The role operates under close supervision of a senior Quantity Surveyor.

What does joining an apprenticeship at Costain offer you?

Costain offers a variety of apprenticeships across different levels and durations, working on projects in sectors like nuclear, highways, rail, water, airports, and tunnels across the UK. Support is provided by project managers, the Early Careers Team, and training providers, which may include colleges, universities, or independent providers.

During the interview, the qualification level and training provider will be discussed. Apprentices work both on-site and off-site, with support from their local team and line manager, balancing work and studies to meet technical and competency goals.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop understanding of the built environment.
  2. Assist in enquiries, tender analysis, negotiations, and contract administration.
  3. Help prepare and agree payment applications and assess invoices.
  4. Manage change and risk communication on projects.
  5. Report on project budgets and costs.
  6. Maintain records, prepare meeting packs, and take minutes.
  7. Undertake studies to obtain a qualification as agreed.
  8. Understand health and safety regulations and ensure compliance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Essential
  • Proactive in self-development and pursuing a professional qualification.
  • Good oral, written, graphic, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in teams.
  • Understanding of company policies, procedures, and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Five GCSEs (grades A*-C) including Maths and English or equivalent.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Working towards an RICS/CICES accredited degree or similar qualification.
