Job Description:

The Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford, located at Sherrington Building, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PT, is offering an exciting opportunity for an Apprentice Property Maintenance Operative. The role offers a salary of £25,331 per year and provides a valuable apprenticeship experience to develop skills in property maintenance, ensuring buildings are maintained safely and efficiently.

About the Role: You will start a new career in property maintenance, bringing a mature outlook, transferable skills, and a willingness to learn. You will join a team of Facilities Management professionals dedicated to providing excellent service to our managed buildings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems, including cryo-storage facilities, laboratory equipment, compressed air, and general building services.
  • Support routine inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and perform basic repairs in office and laboratory environments.
  • Operate tools and equipment safely and effectively, including in a workshop setting.

About the apprenticeship: The apprenticeship is conducted in partnership with Abingdon and Witney College at Bicester Construction Skill Centre. It includes Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths (if needed) and a Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship, taking approximately 18-24 months to complete with support from the University and College. Training involves eleven weeks of block release at Bicester.

About you: We seek individuals passionate about learning, responsible, proactive, with a can-do attitude, and eager to embrace new challenges. No prior experience is necessary; evidence of passes at 9-3 or A*-D in GCSE Maths and English is required.

Requirements:

  • Understanding of excellent customer service
  • Aptitude for skills taught during the apprenticeship (via work experience, qualifications, or references)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Ability to work in various conditions, including outdoor environments and confined spaces
