An exciting opportunity has arisen within Theatres to study as an Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner. This is a new and innovative route to acquire the knowledge, skills and behaviours across different areas of perioperative care.
This 3 year course combines work-based and academic learning between The Royal Shrewsbury and The Princess Royal, Telford Hospitals and Staffordshire University, in which you will study for the Operating Department Practice (Degree Apprenticeship) -BSc (Hons).
During the Apprenticeship you will develop skills and knowledge that will allow you to work in today's dynamic, complex and changing healthcare environment. Whilst you will be allocated to the Operating Department, you will also experience working across both internal and external clinical placements to gain wider experience, meeting the standards required for Operating Department Practice.
Applications are encouraged from Nursing Associates, Assistant Practitioners, Health T Levels & Health and Social Care students, & HCA's, other health care professions will be considered. Work experience within Theatres is preferred and visit encouraged. Evidence of recent study and the ability to study at a higher level is essential.
Apprentice ODP's will work with each other to maintain patient safety and provide high standards of skilled care and help during each stage of the patient's journey through the operating theatre in anaesthetics, surgery & post-anaesthetic care.
The ODP Apprentice role will involve working at The Princess Royal Hospital ,Telford and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
As part of the course you will be required to:-
The Princess Royal Hospital comprises of 11 Operating Theatres covering a range of general, major & day case surgery including 24/7 obstetric service, general surgery, gynaecology, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, elective and orthopaedic trauma , breast surgery, paediatrics and emergency CEPOD Theatre provision 24/7. There are 3 theatre areas, Elective Hub, Main Theatres and Maternity.
The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital comprises of 9 Operating Theatres covering a range of major & day case surgery including colorectal, urology, upper GI, bariatric, vascular, robotics, orthopaedic trauma surgery and emergency CEPOD Theatre provision 24/7. You will be joining a pro-active, dynamic, multi-disciplinary team who offer high standards of perioperative care. Every day is different-challenging but rewarding. WHAT WILL THE APPRENTICESHIP COVER?
The apprentice will study a diverse range of topics over the duration of the programme:
Year 1 Modules:
o Introduction to Operating Department
o Preparation of the Patient for Anaesthesia and Surgery
o Perioperative Care Pathways
o Fundamentals of Perioperative Practice
Year 2 Modules:
o Research Methods in Health & Social Care
o Developing Perioperative Care Strategies
o Care of Patients with Comorbidities
o Intermediate Perioperative Care
Year 3 Modules:
o Leadership, Management & Change in Health and Social Care
o Emergency Care in the Operating Department and Associated Areas
o Research and Development in the Operating Department
o Specialised Perioperative Practice (Degree Apprenticeship)
