Job description

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Theatres to study as an Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner. This is a new and innovative route to acquire the knowledge, skills and behaviours across different areas of perioperative care.

This 3 year course combines work-based and academic learning between The Royal Shrewsbury and The Princess Royal, Telford Hospitals and Staffordshire University, in which you will study for the Operating Department Practice (Degree Apprenticeship) -BSc (Hons).

During the Apprenticeship you will develop skills and knowledge that will allow you to work in today's dynamic, complex and changing healthcare environment. Whilst you will be allocated to the Operating Department, you will also experience working across both internal and external clinical placements to gain wider experience, meeting the standards required for Operating Department Practice.

Applications are encouraged from Nursing Associates, Assistant Practitioners, Health T Levels & Health and Social Care students, & HCA's, other health care professions will be considered. Work experience within Theatres is preferred and visit encouraged. Evidence of recent study and the ability to study at a higher level is essential.

Main duties of the job

Apprentice ODP's will work with each other to maintain patient safety and provide high standards of skilled care and help during each stage of the patient's journey through the operating theatre in anaesthetics, surgery & post-anaesthetic care.

The ODP Apprentice role will involve working at The Princess Royal Hospital ,Telford and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

As part of the course you will be required to:-

  • Deliver high quality, compassionate care under the direction of a Registered ODP / Nurse.
  • Successfully complete all educational elements of the programme as specified by SaTH, University of Staffordshire and Institute of Apprenticeship standards.
  • Work as part of the designated operating department team, delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the patient.
  • Work with a Practice Educator / supervisor, developing your own competence while on placements and attending academic study; maintaining evidence of your learning.
  • Demonstrate a flexible and dynamic attitude, both to your paid work and academic studies.
  • Adherence to SaTH policies, procedures, values and behaviours.
  • Use the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards of proficiency and standards of conduct, performance and ethics to help your learning.
About us

The Princess Royal Hospital comprises of 11 Operating Theatres covering a range of general, major & day case surgery including 24/7 obstetric service, general surgery, gynaecology, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, elective and orthopaedic trauma , breast surgery, paediatrics and emergency CEPOD Theatre provision 24/7. There are 3 theatre areas, Elective Hub, Main Theatres and Maternity.

The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital comprises of 9 Operating Theatres covering a range of major & day case surgery including colorectal, urology, upper GI, bariatric, vascular, robotics, orthopaedic trauma surgery and emergency CEPOD Theatre provision 24/7. You will be joining a pro-active, dynamic, multi-disciplinary team who offer high standards of perioperative care. Every day is different-challenging but rewarding. You must meet the minimum eligibility requirements to apply -

  • Can be any age post full-time education (16+)
  • Cannot already be on an Apprenticeship or any Government funded training
  • Cannot have a qualification at the same or higher level in the same vocational area. There needs to be significant new learning.
  • Has been a UK resident for 3 or more years.

Meets the eligible and valid residency status and permission to work in the UK criteria in Annex A of the linked funding document: Apprenticeship funding rules Aug 2024 - July 2025

  • Mandatory: Must hold level 2 English and Maths (GCSE, Functional Skills or equivalent) - certificates or copies must be provided ASAP.
  • We will need evidence of the highest qualifications achieved to date.
  • Be able to live and work in the UK.
  • If a visa is required, the visa must cover the whole time of the apprenticeship, without and breaks or without the need to renew during the apprenticeship. September 2025 - September 2028 (including Endpoint Assessment)
  • Must not be on any other funded training including taring that is funded via student Loans.
  • Have lived in the UK continuously for the 3 years prior to the start date.
  • Be in a suitable role and have employer support.
  • Be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week.
  • Have a contract of employment to cover the entire duration of the apprenticeship programme.

The apprentice will study a diverse range of topics over the duration of the programme:

Year 1 Modules:

o Introduction to Operating Department

o Preparation of the Patient for Anaesthesia and Surgery

o Perioperative Care Pathways

o Fundamentals of Perioperative Practice

Year 2 Modules:

o Research Methods in Health & Social Care

o Developing Perioperative Care Strategies

o Care of Patients with Comorbidities

o Intermediate Perioperative Care

Year 3 Modules:

o Leadership, Management & Change in Health and Social Care

o Emergency Care in the Operating Department and Associated Areas

o Research and Development in the Operating Department

o Specialised Perioperative Practice (Degree Apprenticeship)

(GCE A Levels - grades BBC or equivalent / Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma - grade DMM / Access to HE Diploma - Pass Access with a minimum of 80 UCAS tariff points. Applicants to Staffs who are taking the Access to HE Diploma receive a reduced tariff point offer as part of our access and participation plan activity / UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma - grade of Merit overall / OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma - grade DMM / T Levels - Eligible T Level applications will be asked to achieve a minimum overall grade of P (A*-C) or Higher Pass as a condition of offer)
