Job description

As a Maintenance Operative Apprentice at NHS Property Services (NHSPS), you will play a vital role in supporting the upkeep and repair of NHS buildings and facilities. This role offers a structured learning environment where you will work alongside experienced professionals, developing essential skills in areas such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and general maintenance. The apprenticeship aims to equip you with the practical knowledge and technical abilities needed to ensure safe, effective maintenance.

Main duties of the job
  1. Learn from assigned mentors and experienced colleagues
  2. Participate in on-site and off-site training, including classes and workshops
  3. Adhere to all health and safety guidelines
  4. Complete homework, tests, and assignments to build technical knowledge
  5. Develop skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the apprenticeship
  6. Understand NHSPS best practices and operational standards
  7. Represent NHSPS positively to internal and external stakeholders
  8. Demonstrate NHSPS values in all activities
  9. Assist in routine maintenance, including repairs across properties
  10. Support basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and decorating tasks
  11. Conduct safety checks and report hazards or faults
  12. Maintain tools, equipment, and workspaces in good condition
  13. Support planned maintenance and emergency repair activities

Job responsibilities

We are launching our 2025 Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship Scheme (Level 2) and seek motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team. This is a 2-year program with an apprenticeship training plan and a professional qualification. Recruitment days will be held on 25th June 2025 at our London office, and successful candidates will start in September after enrollment in August.

Location and Salary

Based at Ashtead Clinic, Ashtead KT21 2BQ. Salary: £20,000.

Candidate requirements
  • Minimum of GCSE English and Maths (Grade 4/C or above)
  • Enthusiastic and passionate about practical work; no prior experience required
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Collaborative attitude with team members and stakeholders
  • A valid Driving License by the end of the apprenticeship
  • Age 16 or over and not in full-time education
