Job description

We are looking to recruit motivated, caring, compassionate individuals for the role of Apprentice Healthcare Support Workers.

The Apprenticeship programme offers a full-time 18-month fixed-term contract, which in most cases leads to a permanent position with Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.

Eligibility criteria:

• Applicants must be aged 18 or over on the start date and have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to enrolment.
• Have a genuine interest in caring for people and be able to demonstrate this in the application.
• Must NOT hold a degree, level four qualification or above in a health-related subject.
• Must not have significant healthcare experience.
• Must hold English and Maths GCSE at grades 9–1 / A*–G or equivalent, and be able to present valid certificates at interview.

You will undertake the Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship, Care Certificate, and BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Care. We offer a comprehensive training programme with workplace support from Vocational Trainers to enhance your knowledge.

We are recruiting for two cohorts starting in September and November 2025. If shortlisted, you will be invited to a selection event on Saturday, 7th June 2025, and must be prepared to stay all day.

Placement may be at Calderdale Royal Hospital or Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Please specify your preference at interview.

Applicants must meet the government-funded apprenticeship eligibility criteria, including being aged 18 or over and having been resident in the UK/EU for the last three years.

Our organization employs over 6,500 staff delivering compassionate care across hospitals, community sites, health centres, and patients’ homes. We also have nearly 150 volunteers.

Services include urgent and emergency care, medical, surgical, maternity, gynaecology, critical care, children’s services, end-of-life care, outpatient, and diagnostic imaging. We also provide community health services, including sexual health clinics in Calderdale.

Role responsibilities include:

• Providing personal care.
• Assisting with nutritional needs.
• Monitoring patients’ health and well-being.
• Supporting procedures as required.
• Communicating effectively with patients, visitors, and staff.

Shifts are rotational, including nights, evenings, weekends, and early mornings starting at 7 am. Some departments may have regular Monday–Friday shifts with limited availability.
