About the Role –We are seeking an Apprentice Health and Safety Technician to join the Fairhurst team in Glasgow. This is an excellent opportunity to kick-start your careers in a supportive environment under the guidance of experienced directors and a dedicated team of Health & Safety consultants, engineers and technicians. As you progress and gain experience you can expect to be active on a number of projects and with a number of clients at any given time.

The Modern Apprenticeship in Occupational Health & Safety or Civil Engineering will run over a three year period during which time you will undertake a supervised programme of training and college day release which can lead to Technical Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Tech IOSH) or Technician Member Technician (EngTech) Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineer (ICE).

RESPONSIBILITIES

As an Apprentice H&S technician you will be working in a team of H&S Consultants, engineers and technicians supporting the delivery of engineering design work and H&S consultancy associated with the construction of permanent and temporary facilities for major public events. Duties may include:

  • attend off-site training programme leading to a recognised qualification
  • assisting a team of H&S consultants, engineers and technicians with the production of engineering drawings, documentation, risk assessments etc.
  • production of 2D drawings using computer software
  • preparation and checking of H&S risk assessments, documentation etc
  • initial checking of own work
  • contributing to providing solutions to design problems
  • meeting agreed deadlines
  • attend and participate in company activities, presentations and workshops
  • keeping your training log up to date and attending training/Continuous Professional Development where appropriate
  • supporting the administration of projects / the team.

You will be assigned a mentor within your team who you will work and liaise closely with you in your day-to-day work

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

You should be studying towards or have achieved:

  • One pass at National 5 level English.
  • One pass at National 5 level Mathematics.
  • One pass at Higher Level C or above in Mathematics or Physics and a pass at National 5 Mathematics would also be beneficial but not essential
  • One pass at National 5 level Craft Design for Manufacture, Design for Manufacture, Graphic Design, Art or similar would also be beneficial but not essential

To be an Apprentice H&S technician you should have:

  • desire to work in an engineering office environment
  • willingness to achieve professional qualification e.g. TechIOSH or EngTech MICE
  • good literacy
  • ability to manage your own time and prioritise at busy times
  • an interest in using computers for design work, calculations, and testing designs
  • ability to produce neat and accurate technical drawings
  • ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organise projects
  • a temperament that means you work well with other people
  • excellent communication skills within a team and externally
  • ability to present and explain the thought processes behind your own design work.

You should be able to demonstrate that you are:

  • willing to learn
  • punctual
  • reliable
  • self-motivated
  • well presented.
