Post Title: Apprentice Gas Engineer (Domestic)
Qualification: Level 3
Salary: National minimum wage
Contractual hours: 37 hours per week
Holidays: 25 days (including paid time off work to attend college)
Contract type: fixed term 4 years

Within City Operations, Neighbourhoods and Regulatory Services (Repairs and Construction Section) we are looking for motivated, enthusiastic individuals to join us on our journey towards investing in the next generation.

You will work alongside one of our dedicated mentors who work in Repairs & Construction and deliver a service to over 26,000 homes within the city as well as public buildings such as schools.

You will get hands-on experience to select, install, service and commission all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. You will interact with other construction trades such as bricklayers, plasterers and plumbers and will be working in a team and under supervision.

You will be responsible for producing high quality work which meets standards, specifications and design plans. You are expected to comply with all safety aspects involved with working on a construction site, ensuring the health, safety and wellbeing of yourself and others at all times.

Essential Requirements

In your application you will need to confirm that you meet the essential criteria below.

  • Can complete the application form to a high standard with spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Have 2 GCSEs grade C/4 or above including Maths & English (indicate predicted grades if applicable). Or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English.
  • Have ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Able to demonstrate awareness of the role being applied for and the working environment within construction.
  • Have basic Health and Safety awareness.
  • Have a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the trainee/apprenticeship applied for.
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and industriousness.
  • Able to work as part of a team.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of the organisation.
  • Committed to customer service, including equality and diversity.

Selection Process
  • Shortlisting will commence after the closing date 16 May 2025 the dates for interviews are yet to be confirmed.

Salary

At Newcastle City Council our apprentices are paid a salary based on a percentage of the entry level role of the chosen trade you will be working towards in your apprenticeship, or the statutory national minimum/living wage rate according to age, whichever is greater. This will increase each year as you develop your knowledge and skills.

Pension

On successful appointment to Newcastle City Council, you will automatically be enrolled into the Local Government Pension scheme (LGPS). A percentage of your monthly pay depending on your salary is deducted from your monthly pay.

Annual Leave

Your annual leave entitlement will be 25 days per year.

Probation Period

If you are a new employee to Newcastle City Council your appointment is subject to a successful probationary period of 6 months.

Working Hours

Your working week will consist of 37 hours Mon – Friday.
