Job summary

Women's Engineering Society is seeking an Apprentice Electrical Engineer in Greater London. You will split time between college study and hands-on work, developing practical skills in electrical installation, maintenance, and facilities management under experienced engineers.

You will attend local college one day per week and work the remaining days to gain industry-recognised qualifications while building a foundation for a successful engineering career.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 GCSEs including Maths, English and Science.
  • Functional Skills Level 2 acceptable where stated.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work safely in a workshop or live-site.
  • Commitment to learning and practical problem solving.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with planned maintenance on electrical systems and equipment.
  • Support installation work including wiring and lighting components.
  • Help inspect, test and diagnose electrical faults under supervision.
  • Carry out basic electrical repairs and replacements under guidance.
  • Follow health, safety and permit-to-work procedures.
  • Attend college and training sessions while gaining qualifications.
  • Maintain records and assist with job reports and compliance.
  • Collaborate with facilities teams and other engineers.

Job Description

Throughout your apprenticeship journey, you will attend a local college one day per week to develop the theory and practical knowledge required for your qualification.

The remaining four days will be spent applying your learning in the workplace under expert guidance and supervision, gaining valuable experience in electrical installation, maintenance, testing, and facilities management while developing the skills needed for a successful career in the industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities on electrical systems and equipment.
  • Support electrical installation work, including wiring, containment, lighting, and other electrical components.
  • Help inspect, test, diagnose, and rectify electrical faults under supervision.
  • Carry out basic electrical repairs and replace lamps, sockets, switches, and lighting components.
  • Follow all health, safety, environmental, and permit-to-work procedures, ensuring work areas remain safe and tidy.
  • Support reactive maintenance requests and work collaboratively with electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and facilities teams.
  • Complete maintenance records, job reports, asset updates, and compliance documentation accurately.
  • Attend all college and training sessions while working towards relevant electrical qualifications and developing technical skills.
Skills & Experience
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), typically including Maths, English, and Science, or Functional Skills Level 2.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work safely in a workshop or live-site environment.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues and engineers.
  • Enthusiasm for practical problem-solving and learning new technical skills.
  • Demonstrates resilience under pressure and adapts to changing priorities.
  • Effective time management and organisational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines consistently.
  • Commitment to delivering high standards of customer service and safe working practices.
Learning and Development
  • Work towards qualifications such as NVQ Level 3 and City & Guilds Electrical Installation.
