Role Overview

The Apprentice Construction Plant Mechanic repairs and maintains machinery used on utility and construction sites, including excavators, dumper trucks, and small powered tools. Responsibilities include diagnosing issues, performing repairs, and conducting maintenance checks.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Repair and maintain plant machinery, fixing breakdowns and performing routine checks.
  • Diagnose faults using diagnostic tools; inspect engines, gearboxes, hydraulics.
  • Dismantle and reassemble parts with hand and power tools, using specialized equipment.
  • Perform safety checks and ensure machinery is safe before use.
  • Work with a variety of equipment, including excavators, dumper trucks, trailers, air compressors, and generators.
  • Proficient in IT systems related to maintenance and safety documentation.
Planning and Implementation
  • Collaborate with team members to support daily site operations.
  • Follow safe working practices and promote safety culture.
  • Identify and report machinery faults or maintenance needs.
  • Support completion of site documentation and training logs as part of the apprenticeship.
  • Engage in classroom learning and practical training sessions.
Audit and Review
  • Participate in progress reviews with apprenticeship providers and supervisors.
  • Contribute to safety briefings and team discussions.
  • Maintain training records and monitor personal development.
  • Reflect on learning to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
Decision-Making Authority
  • Raise safety concerns or equipment issues immediately to supervisors.
  • Contribute ideas and solutions during team discussions.
  • Operational decision-making is not within the apprentice's scope but will be developed over time.
Skills and Experience

  • Interest in construction, utilities, plant machinery, and outdoor work.
  • Basic understanding of safety and teamwork on site.
