Job description

We are recruiting for a rare and exciting opportunity to join our friendly and dedicated team as an apprenticeship to become a Clinical Technologist - Radiation Safety & Imaging Physics.

You will undertake a professionally accredited 3-year BSc (Hons) Degree in Healthcare Science (Medical Physics Technology) specializing in Radiation Physics with the University of West of England in Bristol. The course involves majority distance learning with three five-day blocks at UWE Bristol each year, starting September 2025. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible for entry on the professional register for clinical technologists (RCT).

Applicants must meet apprenticeship criteria, including: GCSE C/4 or above in Maths and English, and A-level C or above in a relevant STEM subject or equivalent. (See the university website link for other acceptable qualifications.)

Radiation Safety and Imaging Physics provides scientific support services for users of ionising radiation, including X-Ray, CT, Radiotherapy, and Nuclear Medicine. Your role will include supporting the team of Clinical Scientists by working on diagnostic radiology equipment testing, radiation safety assessments, and managing radioactive materials.

You will work across our hospital sites, including Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals, with occasional visits to community sites.

Salary will be Band 5 Annex 21: Year 1 (£24,567) at 65% of top Band 5, Year 2 (£26,457) at 70%, and Year 3 (£28,347) at 75%. Internal applicants will be via Annex 30.

For this apprenticeship, you will spend approximately one day a week on online studies, with the remaining time on-the-job training to develop your skills as a Clinical Technologist.

The degree program combines face-to-face, work-based, and online learning, blending directed and independent study.

On-the-Job Training Responsibilities:

  • Perform Quality Assurance tests and produce performance reports on diagnostic radiography and non-ionising radiation equipment.
  • Assist with radiation safety assessments.
  • Support the technical and scientific work of the service, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Help in the commissioning and acceptance testing of new radiographic equipment.
  • Assist with managing personal dosimetry for the Trust.
  • Support work with radioactive materials, including accurate record-keeping.
