Job description

Salary: £48,516 per year

Contract Type: Temporary

Position Type: Part Time

Hours: 3 days per week

Work From Home: Hybrid

ROLE SUMMARY

You will be accountable to Scottish Ministers for leading the Board, comprising non-executive and executive members, which will improve, sustain and protect the health of people across Scotland. This is a demanding but fulfilling role, and if you think you have what it takes, we would like to hear from you.

The Chair would be expected to be physically at Board Headquarters in Glasgow or Edinburgh on a regular basis and be available to attend meetings held elsewhere, possibly at locations across Scotland. Work commitments and Board and governance committees will be in a mix of virtual, hybrid and physical settings. Regular meetings with other NHS Board Chairs and the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care are held six times per year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Board Chair is responsible for:

  • ensuring that the public body delivers its functions in accordance with Scottish Ministers’ policies and priorities
  • providing strategic leadership
  • ensuring financial stewardship
  • holding the Chief Executive and senior management team to account.

ROLE CRITERIA

You must be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria:

  • Leading the Board
  • Longer term planning and seeing the bigger picture
  • Oversight of performance and delivery
  • Ability to work co-operatively and collaboratively
  • Deep personal understanding of health inequalities in Scotland

APPLICATION PROCESS

The applicants who most closely meet the requirements being sought will be invited to the final assessment stage. The scheduled dates are:

  • Situational role play exercise on 5 June 2025 - held virtually via MS Teams.
  • Interviews - held in person on 18 June 2025 in Edinburgh.

The annual remuneration for this role is £48,516/£311 per day (non-pensionable). The time commitment for the role is three days per week. Reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed.
