Job summary

Copia Global in Manchester is seeking an Application Scientist to join its growing technical team. You will develop and optimise material formulations for customer applications and perform laboratory testing of advanced materials to demonstrate performance.

You will work closely with R&D, manufacturing and commercial teams to accelerate product development, prepare samples, analyse data and produce clear reports. A strong background in materials science or related field is required.

Qualifications

  • Degree, MSc or PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics or related field.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with material preparation, testing and characterisation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent communication.

Responsibilities

An innovative advanced materials company at the forefront of next‑generation carbon materials is seeking an Application Scientist to join its growing technical team in Manchester. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in developing and evaluating advanced materials for energy storage applications, working closely with customers to demonstrate product performance and support the commercialisation of cutting‑edge technology. Whether your background is in batteries, nanomaterials, carbon materials, coatings or advanced material development, we'd like to hear from you.

Role
  • Develop and optimise material formulations for customer applications.
  • Conduct laboratory testing and performance evaluation of advanced materials.
  • Prepare, process and characterise samples using a range of analytical techniques.
  • Work closely with customers to understand technical requirements and provide application support.
  • Collaborate with R&D, manufacturing and commercial teams to accelerate product development.
  • Analyse and interpret experimental data, producing clear technical reports and recommendations.
  • Support the scale-up of new products from laboratory to commercial applications.
About You
  • Degree, Master's or PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with advanced materials, battery materials, nanomaterials, carbon materials or similar technologies.
  • Hands‑on laboratory experience with material preparation, testing and characterisation.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to customers and colleagues.
  • Experience with battery materials, electrode formulation, slurry preparation, electrochemical testing, spectroscopy, microscopy or other advanced characterisation techniques would be advantageous but is not essential.
