Better Decisions Begin with You

At Aon, we shape decisions for the better to protect and enrich the lives of people around the world. As an organisation, we are united through trust as one inclusive, diverse team, and we are passionate about helping our colleagues and clients succeed.

Wealth Solutions: Retirement

Aon’s Wealth Solutions: Retirement teams help organisations make better decisions about pensions, retirement programmes and long-term financial commitments. In the UK, companies hold significant assets in pension schemes and must plan carefully to meet their obligations over many years. Our actuarial consultants advise trustees and employers on defined benefit pension schemes, helping them understand funding positions, manage financial and operational risks and prepare for the future.

As an Aon Summer Intern, you will work alongside experienced colleagues, earn as you learn and explore what a career as an actuary could look like. You do not need to be an actuarial expert on day one. Through structured learning and hands‑on experience, you will begin developing the quantitative, consulting and communication skills used to help clients understand and manage financial risk.

How work is changing

Technology, including AI-enabled tools and global delivery teams, increasingly supports routine data preparation, reconciliation and baseline calculation. This allows actuarial colleagues to focus earlier on validation, output checking, report drafting and documentation, while elevating the work towards assumption-setting, scenario analysis, methodology communication and client value. During your internship, you will learn to use digital tools thoughtfully, including framing clear prompts, refining outputs and checking AI-supported analysis before it is used to support client work.

Your role as an Actuarial Summer Intern

No two days are the same. You will work across a range of client teams, supporting colleagues who advise either the trustees responsible for pension schemes or the companies that sponsor them. You will gain hands‑on actuarial experience while developing your understanding of how data, models, clients and strategy come together to bring value.

Our aim is to help you understand the potential career path ahead while giving you real responsibility on client projects. Through classroom-based and on-the-job learning, you will develop your technical and consulting skills, including key calculations, communication, project management, commercial awareness and the effective use of AI-enabled and global delivery workflows.

What your day could look like:
Actuarial and analytical tasks may include:
  • Supporting pension scheme analysis by reviewing data, baseline calculations and model outputs, testing scenarios and spotting anomalies.
  • Supporting funding and accounting valuations, projections, benefit calculations, data reconciliation and pension scheme reporting.
  • Conducting data and risk analysis to help clients understand financial obligations, risk drivers, assumptions, market trends and potential future outcomes.
  • Identifying ways for trustees and companies to manage or reduce scheme risks, including longevity, investment and inflation risk.
Client-focused tasks may include:
  • Drafting reports, presentations and analysis summaries that support good governance, financial reporting and client decision‑making.
  • Supporting workstreams, maintaining documentation and contributing to the day‑to‑day delivery of pension scheme and internal projects.
  • Supporting colleagues in client meetings, building relationships and presenting analysis in a clear and accessible way.

You may also gain exposure to specialist areas, depending on business need, such as:

  • Risk Settlement, advising clients on the best way to reduce risk through transferring it to a third party.
  • Member Options, helping clients reduce risk and/or cost by offering pension scheme members the choice to reshape their benefits to better suit their individual circumstances.
  • Analysis of mortality and other demographic factors to predict future trends within Aon's Demographic HorizonsTM
Your Development

As an Aon Summer Intern, you will take part in a structured development experience that combines meaningful work, business learning, skills development and relationship‑building across Aon. It is built around three core elements:

  1. Business learning. On‑the‑job learning with actuarial consultants, client teams and solution line specialists, helping you develop your knowledge of Wealth Solutions: Retirement and the wider Aon business.
  2. Centralised learning. An Aon induction, business skills training and workshops designed to build your confidence, knowledge and network across our business.
  3. Feedback and support. Time with your line manager to agree your goals, alongside regular feedback and support throughout the nine‑week internship.
Your career beyond your Summer Internship programme

Our summer internship is designed as a potential first step towards a long‑term career with us. Your performance during the internship may lead to an offer for a place on our graduate programme in the same business area the following year. We encourage you to apply for an internship that aligns with your longer‑term interests and career ambitions. If you later join Aon as a graduate, you will have access to the structured development, technical training and support associated with that graduate role, including support towards the relevant actuarial qualification.

Entry Requirements:

As Actuarial Consulting is a mathematically based career path you will need:

  • On track to achieve a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in a maths, actuarial science, or other highly numerical degree
  • Have achieved an A-grade or above in Maths A-level, A-grade in Maths Scottish higher or international equivalent
  • To have or are looking to build practical skills in Python, SQL, VBA, or cloud platforms.
What will help you succeed and grow
  • Interest in actuarial consulting, analytics, risk, finance or related fields, and a desire to explore a career in actuarial consulting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem‑solving and analytical abilities, with attention to detail.
  • A collaborative approach, alongside initiative, adaptability and a proactive attitude to feedback.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.
  • An inclusive approach that values different perspectives and helps others feel respected and able to contribute.
  • Confidence using technology and learning new tools, including the judgement to review, refine and challenge AI-supported outputs before relying on them.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience with Python, SQL, VBA, cloud platforms, Copilot or similar technologies is an advantage.
Locations:

Our Wealth Solutions: Pensions teams are based across the UK. All locations offer the same opportunities for learning and career progression and the same financial rewards.

Please apply to this position if you wish to be based in one of the following locations: Birmingham, Bristol, Epsom, Farnborough, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester or St Albans

(If you wish to be considered for a role based in London, please apply for our ‘Actuarial Consulting Pensions Summer Internship Programme – London Only’ role.)

We recognise the value for our Early Career colleagues of being in the office environment from the beginning of their programme. As a new intern, you will spend your 9 weeks in the Aon office or with clients.

If you join us as a graduate after your internship, you will spend the first 6 months based in the office to support your learning, development, and progression. This will enable you access to support from managers, collaborate with colleagues as well as grow your network across Aon. After completing this initial training period, you will then have the opportunity to work more flexibly, spending at least 3 to 4 days face to face in the Aon office or with clients.
