Job description

The Animal Ethics and Biosafety Compliance Officer will play a key role in supporting the Ethics, Integrity and Biosafety team to uphold the highest standards of animal welfare and ethical conduct across all breeding, training, and research activities involving animals at the University.

This position is responsible for ensuring strict compliance with all relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks, including the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (the Animal Code) and the Victorian Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986. The Officer will also help implement best-practice veterinary and animal care standards, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement, ethical responsibility, and institutional accountability in the use of animals for scientific and educational purposes.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have

  • The appointee will have a relevant tertiary qualification and experience in research or research administration with at least 2 years’ subsequent relevant experience, or extensive experience in regulatory compliance and auditing.
  • Previous experience in conducting compliance audits to a high standard.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal direction and within a team.
  • Extensive knowledge and application of relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice governing the use and care of laboratory animals and institutional biosafety.
  • Understanding of laboratory animal science, animal ethics and quality assurance.
  • Knowledge of humane care and housing of animals with understanding of applicable legislation, standards and guidelines.
