Job summary

New College Swindon seeks an Animal Care Technician to join our Lifestyle team. You will care for a diverse range of animals, support practical sessions and help develop our Animal Care Centre.

Working with lecturers and students, you’ll monitor health, maintain records, assist with new animals, manage stock and support open events. A Level 3 in Animal Care or toward one plus practical experience is required; driving licence is advantageous.

Qualifications

• This role requires a Level 3 qualification in Animal Care or willingness to work towards one.
• Experience with animal husbandry and high welfare standards.
• Experience supporting learners or practical training in education or industry.
• Understanding of current animal care practices and developments.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to handle varied workload under pressure.

Responsibilities

We're looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Animal Care Technician to join our Lifestyle team. This is an exciting opportunity to work within our Animal Care Centre, helping to maintain exceptional standards of animal welfare while supporting the delivery of practical learning for students.

Working alongside our teaching team, you'll play a key role in the day-to-day running of the Animal Care Centre, caring for a diverse collection of animals, supporting practical sessions and contributing to the development of our expanding facilities.

What you'll do:

• Maintain the highest standards of animal husbandry, health and welfare across the Animal Care Centre.


• Support the daily operation of the Animal Care Centre, ensuring animals are cared for safely and professionally.


• Assist lecturers and students during practical sessions, helping to deliver an engaging learning experience.


• Monitor animal health and wellbeing, maintaining accurate records including health checks, feeding logs and risk assessments.


• Assist with the introduction of new animals and support the ongoing development of the College's animal collection.


• Manage stock control and order resources to support curriculum delivery.


• Build positive relationships with external organisations and other colleges to share best practice in animal care.


• Contribute to the planning and development of the College's new Animal Care Centre.


• Support College open events, marketing activities and student engagement opportunities.


• Work as part of a team providing 365-day care for the animals, including weekends, Bank Holidays and holiday periods on a rota basis.

What we're looking for:

• A Level 3 qualification in Animal Care or a related subject, or a willingness to work towards one.


• Experience of animal husbandry and maintaining high standards of animal welfare.


• Experience working with learners or supporting practical training in an educational or industry setting.


• An understanding of current animal care practices and developments within the sector.


• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.


• The ability to work calmly under pressure and manage a varied workload.


• A genuine passion for the animal care industry and a commitment to promoting excellent animal welfare.


• A proactive and flexible approach, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.


• A full UK driving licence would be advantageous.


• A willingness to work across College campuses where required and participate in a rota that includes weekends and holiday periods to provide continuous animal care.
