Role Overview

The City of London Corporation's Heathrow Animal Reception Centre (HARC) provides care for animals passing through Heathrow airport. The team enforces animal welfare in transport, ensuring animal health and public protection.

As an Apprentice Animal Attendant, your duties include kennel and cattery husbandry, welfare checks, and compliance with animal health regulations. You will also care for exotic species like reptiles and handle special arrivals, including zoo animals.

Qualifications and Training

This position is suitable for individuals with a basic knowledge (Level 2 or equivalent) who wish to develop their skills through a Level 3 apprenticeship lasting 24 months. Training includes liaising with pet owners, operating machinery, handling hazardous species, and more.

Requirements: You should hold a driving license, have your own transport, and be able to work shifts including weekends and unsocial hours. You will study towards a Level 3 Zookeeper and Aquarist qualification while gaining practical experience.

Candidate Profile

We seek dynamic individuals with high attention to detail, strong customer service and interpersonal skills, and a keen interest in animal welfare.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Be over 18 by the end of the summer holidays
  • Living in England
  • Not in full-time education at application time
  • Non-UK citizens must have UK residence permission for at least three years prior to start
  • Evidence of English and Maths GCSE Grade C/5 or equivalent
