Tesco UK in Welwyn Garden City is seeking an Android developer with Kotlin experience to help evolve and scale our Scan As You Shop platform. You will own frontend and backend components within the Android domain, contribute to CI/CD, and collaborate with Product Managers across the business.
The role is permanent with hybrid working and offers the chance to work on in-store technology used by millions of Tesco customers.
Tesco UK • Welwyn Garden City • Hybrid • Full-Time • Permanent • Working hours 36 • Apply by 02-Nov-2026
Tesco's Scan As You Shop solution is an in-store experience that lets customers build a virtual basket on a handheld device during their shopping journey so that they can keep a close eye on their budget and skip the queues at checkout. Since late 2021, we've brought the solution entirely in house, and we're now live in over 850 stores across the UK and the Republic of Ireland, with plans to move into other regions. We're also developing a new in-store solution for large kiosk screens designed to help customers navigate product ranges in the stores.
The engineering team owns the UI applications (built on Android OS), a small backend service, and a few other technology components that support the solution. All the engineers in the team ultimately take ownership of both the frontend and backend systems within the domain. As the solution grows, we need to take care of the system as a platform, with all the complexities that involves.
We're looking for a new team member, preferably with a background in Android development, that can help us evolve and scale our systems as we navigate a wide range of challenges in the context of store technology.
We're a friendly team that takes collaboration and agility seriously, looking for the right person to help us move our ecosystem forward.
