Job summary

Sonoco in Wantage, UK is seeking an Analytical Chemist to apply subject expertise in food and water analysis, lead investigations, and support quality control and regulatory activities across R&D and manufacturing teams.

You will operate and maintain instruments including HPLC, IC, ICP-OES, FTIR, GC, GC-MS and DSC, provide data interpretation and timely reporting, and contribute to the training and development of staff and apprentices while ensuring traceability and documentation throughout the

Responsibilities

• Using subject expertise and analytical techniques to conduct analyses and lead investigations for Sonoco's business, customers and R&D teams.
• Perform Food & Water Analysis.
• Support Plant Quality Control.
• Identify Contaminants and Foreign Bodies.
• Provide Food Contact Regulatory Support.
• Investigate taint and odour issues.
• Conduct other analytical investigations using in-house or outsourced resources.
• Generate accurate data using techniques such as HPLC, IC, ICP-OES, FTIR, GC, GC-MS, DSC.
• Maintain, service and keep ready all lab equipment and support lab facility standards.
• Develop techniques and expand knowledge to investigate chemistry-based issues.
• Provide insightful interpretation and timely reporting of technical data with conclusions and recommendations.
• Train and develop staff and apprentices in areas of expertise.
• Manage workload and samples using IT systems with full traceability and proper documentation.

What you'll be doing

• Using subject expertise and appropriate analytical techniques, conducting analyses and lead investigations as appropriate to support Sonoco's business, customers, and other R&D teams, including:
• Food & Water Analysis
• Support Plant Quality Control
• Contaminants/ Foreign Body Identification
• Food Contact Regulatory Support
• Taint and Odour Investigations
• Other Analytical investigations using either in-house or out-sourced resources

Generation of accurate and reliable data using techniques such as

• High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
• Ion Chromatography (IC)
• Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometry (ICP-OES)
• Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR)
• Gas Chromatography (GC)
• Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS)
• Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

Ensure all lab equipment for which they are responsible is maintained, serviced, and ready for use at all times, and support the upkeep and standards within the lab facility

Develop techniques and expand knowledge to investigate chemistry-based issues

Insightful interpretation and formal reporting in a timely manner of technical data with clear conclusions and recommendations

Train and development of other staff and apprentices in areas of expertise

Manage workload and samples using appropriate IT systems: ensure full traceability of samples is maintained by clear and accurate documentation and labelling
