Day-to-Day Responsibilities of an Anaesthetist

The main priority for anaesthetists is to ensure the safety of patients who will undergo surgery. Some of the most common daily duties include:

  • Assessing a patient’s suitability for surgery
  • Creating anaesthetic plans
  • Preparing patients for potential risks and ensuring they understand what will happen during and after their operation
  • Administering anaesthesia to patients before their procedure
  • Monitoring patients whilst they are under anaesthesia in the operating theatre
  • Performing administrative duties such as filling out reports of patients
Qualifications Required

To become an anaesthetist, you must complete a degree recognized by the General Medical Council (GMC) or finish a doctor degree apprenticeship, which takes around five years. This is followed by a two-year foundation training programme that allows you to undergo specialist training.
