AMU Lead Therapist (Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist)
Job Summary: To lead a high-quality, effective, and efficient AMU therapy service within inpatient therapy services. To work collaboratively with system partners and stakeholders to ensure a seamless pathway for patients accessing the service. To utilise highly specialised and expert clinical reasoning skills and therapeutic knowledge to manage an autonomous caseload and provide support to the AMU therapy team. To be the lead therapist for the AMU at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. To support inpatient Lead Therapists in the operational management of the AMU team, ensuring development of the service in line with evidence-based practice across the entire Acute and Emergency pathway.
Key Result Areas & Performance:
- Clinical:
- Responsibility for delivering Queen Elizabeth Hospital's AMU Therapy service.
- Act as an expert in acute assessment, intervention, and rehabilitation, providing advice and teaching to patients, therapists, healthcare professionals, GPs, and consultants.
- Autonomous practitioner managing a caseload, promoting admission avoidance and timely discharge.
- Provide clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary AMU team, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and support staff.
- Collaborate with other lead therapists and partners to develop the strategic and operational aspects of the service.
- Apply advanced theoretical and evidence-based knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology in assessments and diagnoses.
- Manage a designated caseload efficiently, ensuring high standards of patient care.
- Carry out skilled therapy assessments and interventions, including therapeutic handling.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary interventions and educate patients, carers, and relatives.
- Offer specialist advice on medical conditions related to falls.
- Ensure continuous quality improvement through staff development.
Workforce:
- Provide expert guidance and support to other therapists in managing patients post-acute presentation.
- Manage, supervise, and coordinate the AMU therapy team, including staff appraisal, performance management, and recruitment.
Financial:
- Manage resources to deliver an efficient service within budget.
- Oversee roster management and authorize staffing timesheets.
- Lead on recruitment alongside the site lead.
Partnerships, Communication, and Relationships:
- Refer to other health disciplines as appropriate using specialist knowledge.
- Collaborate with hospital pathways and external services to develop seamless patient pathways.
- Act as a resource for clinicians regarding therapy management.
- Maintain accurate records, including progress and discharge reports.
- Motivate and communicate effectively with complex and sensitive information.
- Convey complex knowledge clearly to patients and staff, respecting differing levels of understanding.
- Manage stressful or emotional situations empathetically.
- Participate in meetings, liaise with colleagues, and represent the department on various groups.
