The successful candidate will be responsible for the research, design, development, and implementation of signal processing algorithms for sonar and transducer-based technologies in challenging environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and develop algorithms for sonar signal processing, including beamforming, detection, classification, and localization.
  2. Model acoustic transducers and simulate sonar system performance under various operational conditions.
  3. Analyse real-world sonar data to validate and refine algorithm performance.
  4. Work closely with hardware and systems engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of software with sensor systems.
  5. Support system-level design activities including requirements analysis, system modelling, and performance prediction.
  6. Contribute to research initiatives and innovation in underwater acoustics and sonar technologies.
  7. Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations for internal stakeholders and clients.
  8. Operate within a secure development environment ensuring adherence to defence standards and protocols.

Required Skills and Experience:

  1. Active SC Clearance or eligibility to obtain SC level UK Security Clearance.
  2. Strong background in underwater acoustics, sonar, and transducer systems.
  3. Experience in developing algorithms for sonar applications, particularly in signal processing and acoustic modelling.
  4. Proficiency in tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Python for algorithm development and data analysis.
  5. Familiarity with embedded implementation of signal processing algorithms (e.g., in C/C++).
  6. Strong understanding of physics-based modelling of acoustic propagation and transducer behaviour.
  7. Experience working in the defence sector, particularly maritime systems, is highly desirable.
  8. Degree (BSc/MSc/PhD) in Acoustics, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Physics, Signal Processing, or a related discipline.

Desirable:

  1. Experience with synthetic aperture sonar (SAS), passive/active sonar systems, or mine detection systems.
  2. Understanding of system-level integration and verification of sonar solutions.
  3. Familiarity with environmental data modelling (e.g., sound speed profiles, bathymetry).
  4. Experience using sonar datasets from sea trials for algorithm validation.
