Job summary

Thurrock Council is seeking an experienced Environmental Health professional to lead air quality management, monitor performance, and support strategic planning. You will present complex pollution data to senior officers and elected members, ensuring timely responses to high level inquiries.

The role requires proficiency in report writing, strong communication, and DBS clearance at Standard level. Hybrid working and ongoing development opportunities are available.

Qualifications

• Must hold an Environmental Health degree or equivalent in Pollution Control.
• Experience handling local air quality management preferred.
• DBS check at Standard Level required.

Responsibilities

• Perform statutory air quality duties and meet deadlines.
• Manage air quality monitoring network and Action Plan delivery.
• Answer complex queries from senior officers and the public.
• Provide air quality responses to planning consultations and planning authorities.
• Operate and maintain monitoring equipment and manage data.
• Prepare high quality reports and communicate complex science clearly.

Job description

The post holder will be responsible for performing all statutory duties of the Council in relation to local air quality management. They will ensure that statutory deadlines are met, manage the air quality monitoring network, implement the Air Quality Action Plan and advise on complex cases related to their service area.

you must be a confident presenter with advanced Pollution Control expertise. You will attend high level meetings to answer complex questions in relation to air quality. You will compile high-quality responses to complex enquiries from senior officers, elected officials and the public.

The post holder will answer relevant service requests and collate high level complaint responses to ensure relevant government and departmental deadlines are met. You will provide air quality responses to planning consultations. You will be competent in the use and effective maintenance of relevant scientific and technical monitoring equipment.

You must be highly proficient at communicating complex, nuanced scientific information to a variety of audiences. You will also have the ability to effectively organise and time manage your work. You will need comprehensive computer skills and an understanding of database management. Excellent report writing skills are also essential for this role.

Essential Qualifications:

You must hold an Environmental Health BSc, MSc or relevant Pollution Control scientific qualification.

Those without direct experience of local air quality management will not be shortlisted for this role.

DBS Check: At Standard Level is required for this post.
