Job summary

AstraZeneca's Oncology R&D team in Cambridge is seeking an Associate Principal Scientist, AI and Computational Tools, for a 1-year fixed-term contract. You will lead AI-powered tools, shape data infrastructure, and act as an AI Architect across multiple initiatives, collaborating with wet and dry labs to deliver scalable, reproducible AI-enabled discovery.

You will mentor colleagues, stay current with AI methods, and present findings to leadership while ensuring compliance and robust data

Qualifications

• Proven experience leading complex computational/AI initiatives in a scientific setting.
• Experience using agentic AI frameworks or LLM integration in research contexts.
• Experience building tools for others (Shiny apps, automated reporting, shared analysis packages).
• Experience building structured, quality-controlled data infrastructure for analysis and AI.

Responsibilities

• Lead AI-powered tools, workflows, and data pipelines with measurable scientific value.
• Shape data infrastructure and data standards for reproducible research.
• Act as AI Architect, guiding technology choices and reusable code adoption.
• Drive delivery of AI and computational capability projects balancing innovation and governance.
• Mentor teams in AI-enabled approaches and reproducible workflows.
• Collaborate with Data Science, R&D IT, and platform teams to scale solutions.
• Develop agentic workflows to extract insights from high-dimensional data.
• Stay up-to-date with AI methods and evaluate fit-for-purpose approaches.
• Prepare scientific/technical presentations for the group and leadership.
• Ensure compliance and maintain accurate ELN records.
