Agronomist - Field Vegetables

About the Company:
Our client is a dynamic, well-established fresh produce business supplying high-quality field vegetables to major UK retailers. Their operation includes both UK and overseas production, with a strong commitment to innovation, sustainability, and research-led crop development.

Agronomist - The Job Role Details:
As an Agronomist, you will be involved across the entire crop production lifecycle from seed to harvest. You'll play a vital role in advising on crop protection, fertiliser strategy, and sustainable agronomy techniques. This position includes the opportunity to contribute to overseas production and liaise with research bodies, technical committees, and retailers.

Agronomist - Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide crop protection recommendations for field vegetables (including salad onions, legumes, asparagus, and pumpkins), using IPM/ICM principles
  • Conduct regular field walking and report crop husbandry observations using Greenlight/Muddyboots
  • Plan pesticide schedules around harvest intervals and customer requirements
  • Maintain and verify crop protection records and ensure traceability
  • Develop fertiliser plans, conduct soil testing, and generate application strategies using tools such as SOYL and Omnia
  • Update and manage product approval and pesticide compliance lists
  • Monitor pests using traditional and emerging technologies
  • Support spray operators with best practices and timing recommendations
  • Advise on legislative and compliance changes related to crop protection
  • Manage pesticide ordering using internal procurement systems
  • Support with sustainability initiatives including soil and water management
  • Collaborate with crop managers to plan and conduct trials for new products and techniques
  • Lead audit preparation for schemes such as Red Tractor, LEAF, and F2F
  • Develop and update conservation and biodiversity plans in line with customer expectations
  • Participate in industry technical committees and research collaboration
  • Provide updates on farm carbon footprint and contribute to broader environmental planning
  • Champion regenerative agricultural practices and research alternative fertiliser solutions

Agronomist - Ideal Person Skills & Qualifications:
You will have/be:

  • BASIS and FACTS qualifications (or working towards)
  • Practical agronomy experience in field vegetable crops
  • Strong knowledge of pesticide use, fertiliser management, and soil science
  • Comfortable using agronomy software and digital planning tools
  • A proactive, problem-solving approach to crop challenges
  • Ability to collaborate with both operational teams and external stakeholders
  • A keen interest in research and development within sustainable agriculture
  • A valid UK driver's license and willingness to travel between sites
