Job summary

The Opportunity Hub UK is looking for a Smart Farming Software Engineer in Birmingham to help build scalable software that turns field sensor data into actionable farmer insights. You’ll influence architecture and tooling as the product grows, collaborating with agronomists and farmers to deliver end-to-end features.

Qualifications

• A few years of commercial software engineering experience, ideally with backend or full-stack work.
• Comfort with cloud infrastructure and handling data at scale.
• Some exposure to IoT devices, sensor data, or hardware integration is a strong plus.
• The ability to work independently and make sound calls without waiting for permission.
• Genuine curiosity about agriculture, even if you've never worked in it before.
• Clear communication. You'll be talking to farmers and agronomists as often as engineers.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain software that processes live data from field sensors and farm machinery
• Design APIs that connect hardware in the field to dashboards farmers check every morning
• Write clean, tested code across the stack, from data pipelines to user-facing tools
• Work directly with agronomists to translate farming problems into working features
• Debug issues that show up in real conditions, not just on a test bench
• Take part in decisions about architecture and tooling as the platform grows
