Job summary

Airbus in Filton is seeking an Aerodynamic Icing Engineer to join the Aircraft Aerodynamics team. You will contribute to the next generation of Airbus aircraft by modelling icing effects, supporting certification, and guiding wind tunnel and flight test programs.

You will work with stakeholders in Future Projects and R&D, bringing expertise in aerodynamics, Python data analysis, and test methods to deliver safe, efficient aircraft designs.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of aerodynamics, including lift/drag generation and its effects on performance and safety.
• Ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
• Ability to lead team members or subcontractors technically or operationally in an international environment.
• Experience in Python coding (or similar) for data analysis.

Responsibilities

• Conduct state-of-the-art computational modelling and simulation of aerodynamic icing and its effects on performance and safety.
• Steer aerodynamic icing certification for future aircraft using data-driven methods.
• Define, attend and analyse wind tunnel test results at world-leading facilities.
• Define, attend and analyse flight test results, guiding decisions using live telemetry.

In Aircraft Aerodynamics, we master the complex aerodynamics of our aircraft to understand how they perform across the entire envelope of their missions. Through the generation and analysis of aerodynamic data, our work has a direct impact on aircraft operations, safety and fuel burn, meaning we play a pivotal role in securing the sustainable aviation of the future. We are looking for a highly motivated Aerodynamic Icing Engineer, to join our team as we grow to prepare for the next generation of Airbus aircraft! With primary stakeholders in Future Projects and R&D departments, you will be contributing directly to the development of our future aircraft programmes.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM

• State of the art computer modelling and simulation of aerodynamic icing accretion and its effects on aircraft performance, handling qualities and safety
• Participating and steering the aerodynamic icing certification of future aircraft, and using data- and engineering-driven methods for influencing future icing certification requirements
• Defining, attending and analysing results of wind tunnel tests at world leading facilities across the globe
• Defining, attending and analysing results of flight tests, including steering flight test decisions in real-time based on live telemetry data

ABOUT YOU

• Knowledge of aerodynamics, including the factors that influence the generation of aircraft lift and drag
• The ability to communicate complex messages simply and adapt those messages to your audience
• The ability to lead other team members technically or subcontractors operationally on a given project in an international environment
• Experience in Python coding (or similar) for data analysis

Additionally, any of the below would be of benefit for this role

• Knowledge of aerodynamic icing phenomena, the conditions and factors that influence this, its effect on the aircraft performance, handling qualities, and safety, and the associated certification requirements
• Knowledge or experience of aircraft flight operations and performance, for example the factors that influence take off and landing performance, aerodynamic safety limitations, and the flight phases of a commercial aircraft.
• Knowledge of CS-25 or FAR25 icing certification standards
• A solid understanding or practical experience of modelling the aerodynamics of 2D or 3D geometries in CFD, including the suitability and effect of different mesh types and turbulence models, the appropriate use of time-averaged modelling, convergence criteria, and interpreting results
• A solid understanding or practical experience of planning, supporting and analysing wind tunnel tests and/or flight tests, including the measurement techniques, practical limitations, and common aerodynamic considerations and corrections
