Advanced Speech and Language Therapy Assistant

Job summary

We are looking for a keen and enthusiastic person to join our Children's Speech and Language Therapy team.

You will support the delivery of therapy packages and interventions to children on the Speech & Language Therapy caseloads within our Early Years Complex Needs team.

You will work under the guidance of qualified paediatric SLTs.

Although based mainly at Featherstone Health Centre, this post will be primarily at Pinderfields and Pontefract Hospitals, with home/nursery visits throughout the week.

This role is temporary for 9 months to cover Maternity Leave. We are a friendly, supportive team.

You will receive regular clinical and safeguarding supervision, with support from therapists and other Band 4 practitioners.

This role requires a self-motivated, professional individual confident to work independently and as part of a team within standard procedures.

The post involves supporting therapists to provide a seamless service to children with complex communication needs.

Interview date: 1st July 2025 (in person only).

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work under supervision of an HCPC-registered Childrens Speech & Language Therapist within the Early Years Complex Needs Team.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Managing a caseload of appropriate clients, conducting therapy sessions with individuals or small groups.
  2. Providing feedback on intervention efficacy and suitability.
  3. Supporting assessments as directed by HCPC-registered SLTs.
  4. Supporting home programmes and creating materials.
  5. Participating in regular clinical supervision.

The candidate should understand service requirements and be empathetic to patients and carers.

Key requirements

Early Years Complex Needs

  • Support children with complex communication needs, modelling therapy techniques, and supporting families with low-tech AAC.
  • Work with small groups to promote language development.
  • Assist other children under supervision of SLTs.

Individual Programmes

  • Monitor progress, conduct assessments, and advise parents and staff.

Groups

  • Manage group sessions, refer children not progressing, and discharge when appropriate.
  • Provide feedback to parents and therapists, manage waiting lists, and organize sessions.

Resources

  • Maintain communication resources and report damages or shortages.

General

  • Ensure safeguarding, follow instructions, recognize limitations, and establish rapport with clients.
  • Work effectively within the team, liaise with other agencies, and plan workload and visits.
  • Contribute to service development, record digital patient data accurately, and participate in projects.
  • Provide supervision and training as appropriate.
