This role allows you to utilize your advanced skills to support patients through emergency and elective colorectal surgical pathways, following Trust and specialty guidelines, with support from registrar and consultant colleagues. You will receive robust support to develop your clinical and leadership skills through a tailored development programme aligned with your experience. Candidates should be educated to master's level in Advanced Clinical Practice, with guidance from a supportive consultant mentor, and opportunities to develop specific competencies.

The Colorectal Advanced Specialist Practitioner role is pioneering and highly valued within our organization.

Main duties of the job

You will play a vital role in the multidisciplinary care of colorectal patients, working closely with medical colleagues to oversee both elective and emergency surgical cases, from pre-operative assessments to post-operative recovery.

This position requires a high level of advanced clinical expertise, with responsibilities including making critical decisions, applying professional judgment, and ensuring optimal patient outcomes. Your skills will be demonstrated through a portfolio of evidence and clinical competence, supported by an MSc qualification.

You will be instrumental in improving care standards, ensuring adherence to colorectal guidelines through supervision, audits, and evidence-based practices. You will provide professional guidance, foster a culture of excellence, support Physician Associates, and lead research and audits to enhance practice and clinical governance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Practice autonomously with high accountability at a specialist level, delivering high-quality care and making critical clinical decisions.

Manage complete episodes of care, working with others to optimize health outcomes and resource use. Provide direct support to patients and support medical and nursing teams as a role model.

Lead on developments within pathways, championing recovery and service improvements, and coordinate admissions, assessments, and discharges in collaboration with medical staff.

  • Motivated practitioner with substantial experience in a relevant clinical setting.
  • Broad and advanced knowledge of clinical pathophysiology and colorectal management.
  • Leadership experience, including service improvement and team management.
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage conflicting pressures.
  • Experience in clinical research, audits, and evidence-based practice.
Qualifications & Education
  • Professional clinical qualification or working towards a specialist qualification.
  • Non-medical Prescribing Qualification if applicable.
  • BSc in relevant clinical field.
  • Masters in advanced clinical practice.
  • Additional qualifications such as teaching, leadership, or advanced life support are desirable.
