Advanced Specialist Pharmacist Neurology B8a (Attracts 5,000 RRP)

Are you an enthusiastic, motivated, and dynamic clinical pharmacist with an interest in Neurology (Stroke, Epilepsy & Neurosurgery)?

Would you like to work as one of two advanced specialist pharmacists providing expert pharmacy input to neurology & neurosurgery patients?

Are you at a stage in your career where you want to develop your clinical skills within well-respected, proactive multidisciplinary teams, managing pharmacy services for Stroke, Epilepsy & Neurosurgery patients?

Would you like to work towards credentialing for a consultant post while utilising your skills as a non-medical prescriber across the Neurology service line?

Candidates who meet the qualifications but may not yet demonstrate full knowledge or experience at Band 8a will still be considered for progression from Band 7 to Band 8a with support to meet the required milestones.

Main duties of the job
  1. Provide high-quality, patient-focused clinical pharmacy services for Neurology patients (Stroke, Epilepsy, Neurosurgery).
  2. Lead the ward-based pharmacy team and collaborate with the clinical pharmacy team.
  3. Undertake teaching and supervision of pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.
  4. Deliver specialist pharmacy services and advice to clinical specialties, demonstrating high clinical effectiveness.
  5. Work closely with care group leads and develop roles for pharmacist non-medical prescribers within Neurology.

Further study and practice research are encouraged and supported, depending on career stage.

This role offers a Recruitment & Retention Premium of £5,000 (payable upon appointment for 36 months) plus a relocation allowance (subject to eligibility). The RRP is for external candidates only and pro-rated for part-time staff.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, 'Priority', and 'At Risk' NHS staff within Devon who demonstrate relevant recent experience.

About us

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS is the largest hospital on the Southwest Peninsula, providing comprehensive secondary & tertiary care to around 2 million people, including cardiothoracic surgery, kidney transplants, neurosurgery, and regional trauma services.

The Neurology department is the largest unit on the peninsula, offering specialized and general neurology services, including an Acute Neurology & Stroke Unit and clinics for various neuro conditions. The department actively participates in research.

Collaborating with the other Advanced Specialist Pharmacist for Neurology, pharmacy staff are integral to multidisciplinary teams supporting these services. From September 2024, the University of Bath MPharm degree will be available at the University of Plymouth, offering opportunities for educational development.

Job responsibilities
  1. Strategic planning and delivery of clinical pharmacy services to Neurology patients.
  2. Support development, monitoring, and reporting on drug expenditure and medicines budgets.
  3. Develop and update clinical pharmacy policies and protocols.
  4. Lead and coordinate the clinical pharmacy team, ensuring training and competence.
  5. Act as a role model and clinical leader within Neurology, focusing on Stroke, Epilepsy, and Neurosurgery.
  6. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including participation in ward rounds and MDT meetings.
  7. Provide expert advice on treatment options, including complex cases, and support antimicrobial stewardship.
  8. Manage medicines queries, provide patient consultations, and liaise with other health services.
  9. Engage in quality improvement, practice research, and policy development.
Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience
  • Proven expertise in clinical pharmacy within Neurology (Stroke, Epilepsy, Neurosurgery).
  • Experience in clinical specialties, pharmacy management, leadership, and service development.
  • Effective communication, negotiation, and influencing skills.
  • Understanding of NHS priorities, strategic care agendas, and budget management.
Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Pharmacy, registered with the GPhC.
  • Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy Certificate and Diploma.
  • Non-medical prescriber (or willingness to undertake training).
  • Memberships with UKCPA and related groups.
Aptitude and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, management potential, and financial understanding.
