Job description

Are you an enthusiastic, motivated, and dynamic clinical pharmacist looking to work within a Major Trauma centre offering tertiary services across various surgical specialties?

Are you at a stage in your career where you want to develop your clinical skills and work within well-respected, proactive multidisciplinary teams supporting the Lead Care Group pharmacist for Surgery & Critical Care to deliver high-quality clinical pharmacy services?

Would you like to work towards credentialing for a consultant post while utilising your skills as a non-medical prescriber across the Surgery Care Group?

Do you want to be part of an innovative department with an ambitious 5-year strategy and workforce plan approved by the Trust Board?

If so, we would love to hear from you!

Depending on your career stage, further study will be encouraged and supported. Practice research is also promoted in this role.

This post offers a Recruitment & Retention Premia (RRP) of £5,000 payable upon appointment (covering 36 months of service), in addition to a relocation allowance (subject to eligibility). The RRP is for external candidates only and is pro-rata for part-time employees. For more details, please contact Vivek Soni at vivek.soni@nhs.net.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Providing high-quality, patient-focused clinical pharmacy services within the Surgery Pharmacy team.
  2. Developing a clinical interest in a specific area to support services for particular patient groups within the surgery care group.
  3. Acting as team leader for the ward-based pharmacy team and as a team member of the Surgery Pharmacy.
  4. Teaching and supervising pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.
  5. Providing specialist clinical pharmacy advice to clinical specialties, demonstrating high clinical effectiveness.

Candidates who meet the qualifications but may not yet demonstrate full knowledge or experience at Band 8a will still be considered for a Band 7 to Band 8a progression. Support will be provided to achieve progression milestones.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, 'Priority', and 'At Risk' NHS staff across Devon with recent relevant experience as per the Person Specification.

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is the largest hospital on the Southwest Peninsula, providing comprehensive secondary and tertiary care, including cardiothoracic surgery, kidney transplantation, neurosurgery, and regional trauma services. From September 2024, the University of Bath MPharm degree will be available at the University of Plymouth, offering opportunities for pharmacists to participate in educational activities and future roles.

The Surgical Care Group covers numerous specialties, many as regional tertiary services, across 29 theatres and 16 ward areas, including Bariatrics, Breast, Cardiac & Thoracic, Colorectal, Paediatrics, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Maxillofacial, Neurosurgery, Upper GI, Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary, Orthopaedics, Major Trauma, Plastics, Urology, Vascular, and General Surgery.

The pharmacy team is a vital part of the multidisciplinary team supporting these services, working alongside clinicians, nurse specialists, and other healthcare professionals.
