The Role

The Advanced Research Engineer (ARE) role focuses on the technical delivery of projects and supports the development of project-related activities across The MTC, working across various technology departments and industrial sectors. This role specifically emphasizes the delivery of projects and research using non-contact metrology techniques and associated analysis.

As a member of the Metrology and NDT team, part of the Digital Engineering Group, you will join a diverse team aimed at delivering impactful projects and innovative research in inspection.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Independently deliver larger project's technical outputs and act as Technical Lead for smaller projects, ensuring work meets or exceeds customer requirements within budgets and timelines.
  2. Undertake innovative engineering research focused on technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL/MRL) 3+ with demonstrated industrial project delivery.
  3. Contribute to identifying, specifying, and delivering new technology capabilities into the MTC, customers, or industrial members' premises.
  4. Participate in all aspects of project delivery, including concept generation, detailed design, compliance with standards, technical support of commissioning, and managing project budgets and deliverables.

Person Specification

Essential Skills / Qualifications / Experience

Knowledge

  • Degree-level engineer, technologist, scientist, or mathematician, ideally working towards professional registration.
  • Proven knowledge and application of metrology techniques through previous project work, especially with non-contact methods such as structured light scanners, laser line scanners, or surface metrology techniques like focus variation, confocal microscopy, and interferometry (white light/coherence scanning).
  • Broader knowledge of tactile measurement techniques such as CMMs.
  • Understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of these technologies and their suitability for specific inspection applications, including the ability to make objective recommendations.
  • Experience leading validation trials to demonstrate system capabilities, including familiarity with measurement system analysis (MSA) methods.
  • Aware of how metrology and inspection support broader Digital Engineering / Industry 4.0 concepts.
  • Experience working in R&D or project-based environments.
