Overview

Our neonatal unit is committed to delivering the highest standards of family-centred care, supported by a highly skilled and collaborative multidisciplinary team. As an Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (ANNP), you will provide advanced clinical expertise in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of neonates with a wide range of complex needs. You will work both independently and in partnership with colleagues to ensure that every baby receives the best start in life, while supporting families during what is often a challenging and emotional journey.

Responsibilities
  • Work independently on the medical rota (Tier 1/Tier 2 depending on level of expertise and clinical area) to provide 24-hour care as required, with clinical supervision provided by a Consultant Neonatologist.
  • Hold the emergency bleep for labour ward calls, attend at-risk deliveries, and carry out basic and advanced newborn resuscitation where necessary.
  • Carry out examination of the newborn prior to discharge, make appropriate referrals, and instigate treatment when required.
  • Independently prescribe medications within legal requirements.
  • Utilise opportunities with babies and their families for health education and health promotion.
  • Collaborate with other agencies to determine specific service requirements and work to improve health outcomes.
  • Maintain competencies in procedures relevant to neonates.
  • Coordinate, lead, and manage day-to-day activities of the clinical environment.
  • Demonstrate excellent prioritising and time management to meet the unpredictable and conflicting needs of the service.
  • Develop managerial and administrative functions in conjunction with role developments.

Role context

As an Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, you will be an integral part of the neonatal medical team, delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to neonates requiring Level 2 and Level 3 support. You will work autonomously and with consultants, junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals to ensure optimal outcomes for neonates and their families.

  • Act as a clinical leader and role model within the neonatal team.
  • Support the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Participate in service development, quality improvement initiatives, and audits.
  • Contribute to workforce planning and rota coordination where appropriate.
  • Provide mentorship and clinical supervision to junior staff, students, and trainee ANNPs.
  • Deliver teaching sessions and contribute to ongoing education of the neonatal team.
  • Maintain own professional development and revalidation requirements.
  • Communicate sensitively and effectively with families, providing updates and involving them in care decisions.
  • Liaise with multidisciplinary teams including midwives, obstetricians, paediatricians, and allied health professionals.
  • Support families emotionally and practically, signposting to relevant services when needed.
