Job description

Mayfield Surgery is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Advanced Nurse Practitioner to join our friendly and dynamic team.

This permanent, full-time position offers protected learning time, CPD, and support from a dedicated GP supervisor to help you flourish within the role.

Main duties of the job

You will provide care for presenting patients through focused history taking, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of care. You will demonstrate safe, clinical decision-making, and expert care, including assessment and diagnostic skills, within the service. Critical thinking in decision-making, collaborative work with the healthcare team, and supporting policy and procedures are essential. You will deliver holistic and clinical services with support and supervision from GPs, implementing management plans and following protocols as appropriate.

About us

Mayfield Surgery is a forward-thinking, dynamic training practice located on the east side of Northampton, aiming to provide high-quality healthcare for all.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, experienced, and dynamic Advanced Nurse Practitioner to join our clinical team, which includes GPs, nurse practitioners, nursing associates, and practice nurses, to deliver high-quality patient care.

Our team is highly motivated and works together in a welcoming, supportive environment. We are a stable, long-established practice with approximately 9,000 patients. Our clinical team comprises 4 GP partners, 2 salaried GPs, 1 ANP, 1 Nurse Practitioner, 1 Nursing Associate, and 1 Practice Nurse. The Nursing and Admin Teams handle most chronic disease management, non-complex clinical care, and administrative tasks to reduce GP and ANP workload. We use the SystmOne clinical system.

Job responsibilities

Key clinical responsibilities:

  • Assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate treatments and care for patients with undifferentiated diagnoses.
  • Examine and assess patient needs from physiological and psychological perspectives and plan care accordingly.
  • Manage complex needs, acute, and chronic conditions, integrating drug- and non-drug treatments.
  • Prescribe and review medications, ensuring effectiveness and adherence, following evidence-based practice and protocols.
  • Support patient compliance and provide medication advice, including side-effects and interactions.
  • Prioritize health problems and intervene appropriately, including emergency care when necessary.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and self-care strategies.

Communication:

  • Use sensitive communication styles to ensure informed consent.
  • Support patients receiving bad news.
  • Adapt communication methods to meet diverse needs and overcome barriers.
  • Maintain effective communication within the practice and with external stakeholders.
  • Act as an advocate for patients and colleagues.
  • Provide information on support sources (e.g., PALS) in accessible formats.

Delivering a quality service:

  • Work within your competence and NMC code of conduct.
  • Maintain accurate, complete patient records.
  • Manage workload to maintain quality care.
  • Follow NICE guidelines and evidence-based care standards.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, audits, and policy evaluations.
  • Collaborate on improving healthcare quality and respond to policies and initiatives.
  • Evaluate patient responses and the effectiveness of care.
  • Support shared learning and assess policy impacts on care.

Leadership and personal development:

  • Engage in continuous learning and clinical supervision.
  • Support staff development and team collaboration.
  • Lead in planning and implementing care improvements.
  • Contribute to developing guidelines and standards.
  • Promote the role of the ANP and explore role development.
  • Work as an effective team member, delegate appropriately, and create referral pathways.
  • Prioritize workload and foster effective time management.
  • Work with the team to enhance patient care and define shared goals.
