Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an advanced clinical practitioner (ACP) specialising in corneal and anterior segment ophthalmology to join the optometry team. The ACP will work collaboratively with other members of the optometry team, other healthcare professionals and consultant ophthalmologists ensuring they provide clinical excellence in the delivery of high-quality patient centred care.

The role requires a skilled autonomous clinician with highly developed ophthalmic knowledge and prescribing abilities, through a combination of prior experience and higher qualifications. They will demonstrate critical thinking in clinical decision-making processes and will play a key role in service delivery and adherence to policy and procedures. They will also be instrumental in guiding and supporting the development and practice of junior clinicians including teaching and training. The post holder will also be expected to lead on clinical audit as well as taking advantage of opportunities to be involved in research.

You will have excellent organisational skills, be a good communicator and demonstrate a caring, compassionate, and professional approach to patients and staff.We are looking for an ACP who is innovative and creative who can share their experience and existing skills.Experience of working in hospital ophthalmology services is desirable.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Registered optometrist with the General Optical Council
  • College of Optometrists Diploma in Therapeutics (Independent prescribing)
  • Further specialist qualifications e.g., College of Optometrists Higher Qualifications
  • Master’s or Doctorate level equivalent in an optometry/ophthalmology/ management subject
Knowledge, Training and Experience
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge in a range of clinical areas
  • Substantial years’ experience in post graduate clinical experience
  • Ability to competently undertake highly specialist advanced clinical extended roles e.g., cornea, glaucoma, acute services, cataract, medical retina
  • Knowledge and experience of clinical matters beyond direct clinical role e.g., surgical techniques and management
  • Experience working with visually impaired patients & others with learning disabilities
  • Broad understanding of the optometry profession, primary/secondary care interface, NHS service provision
  • Experience of conducting audits and implementing service changes based on audit results
  • Management & leadership: Experience of line management
  • Evidence of research
