Job description

Are you a skilled and experienced Cancer Pharmacist ready to lead change and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team? Do you have the ambition to drive service improvements and develop a high-quality clinical pharmacy service within Haematology and Oncology? An exciting opportunity has arisen at the Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for a highly skilled, experienced, and enthusiastic specialist pharmacist to join our Cancer Pharmacy Team. This role offers a unique chance to make a meaningful impact by combining advanced clinical oncology and haematology expertise with leadership and service development. We are looking for someone with strong clinical knowledge, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a passion for excellence. In this challenging but rewarding role, you will work closely with the Lead Pharmacist for Cancer Services to deliver a comprehensive and high-quality clinical pharmacy service. Your efforts will play a key role in ensuring patient safety, optimising medicines use, and driving clinical effectiveness within our cancer services. If you're ready to take the next step in your career and make a real difference, we want to hear from you!

Key Responsibilities:
  • Specialised Clinical Pharmacy Service: Deliver a specialised, patient-focused clinical pharmacy service to adult and paediatric oncology and haematology patients. Actively contribute to the multidisciplinary team by providing ward-based pharmacy services and key input during clinician ward rounds, clinics, and meetings.
  • Expert Clinical Advice: Serve as a clinical role model, offering highly complex expert advice on the safe, effective, and cost-efficient use of oncology and haematology medicines, in line with Trust and National Guidelines.
  • Service Development and Prescribing: Expand the role of the Cancer Pharmacy Team to meet directorate requirements, practicing as a pharmacist non-medical prescriber to support chemotherapy and associated medications within the Day Therapy Unit.
  • Service Improvement: Lead and support changes in work practices within Cancer Services, fostering good working relationships and implementing innovative solutions to enhance safety and quality in the service.
  • Clinical Governance and Medicines Management: Participate in the planning, implementation, communication, and delivery of clinical governance and medicines management objectives for the Trust. Effectively communicate highly complex and sensitive information with tact and diplomacy.
  • Team Leadership and Supervision: Provide day-to-day clinical supervision and management of Cancer Pharmacists, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services.

We are seeking a dedicated candidate who can work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, demonstrate staff supervisory experience, and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Cancer Pharmacy Service. This includes liaising closely with the Pharmacy Aseptic Services Unit to ensure seamless service delivery. This post is an excellent opportunity for a specialist cancer pharmacist ready to take the next step into a senior management role.

The Pharmacy Department is integral to the Trust's transformation programme, which focuses on enhancing patient experience through innovative technology and modernised practices. Our department is equipped with two robotic storage and dispensing systems and has implemented electronic prescribing for outpatient and chemotherapy clinics, supporting efficiency and safety in medicines management.

As we prepare for the launch of a brand-new Aseptic Services Unit and a state-of-the-art radiotherapy treatment centre, we are excited to be at the forefront of a comprehensive cancer strategy that will shape the future of cancer care at our Trust.
