TheBiochemical Genetics laboratory supports the West Yorkshire region andreceives samples from many other labs nationally. The laboratory performs awide range of assays for the diagnosis and monitoring of inherited metabolicdiseases including amino acid analysis, urine organic acids andacylcarnitines, as well as ultra-specialist tests including creatinemetabolites, white cell cystine and purine and pyrimidine analysis. This isreliant on techniques such as LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, anion exchange-HPLC, thin layerchromatography and more.
Asa biomedical scientist in biochemical genetics you will be a fully competentmember of the department.
Working as part of a team withinyour lab and liaising closely with clinical scientists and the widerpathology department.
Performing a wide range ofspecialist investigations with the ability for clinical interpretation of(particularly annotation of urine organic acid and amino acid chromatograms) and managingspecialist analysis.
Working towards the provision of anaccurate and timely service for patients. You will be expected to applyprofessional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex andsometimes difficult situations with the support of Clinical Scientists.
Within the team you will organisethe tasks of support workers and BMSs and provide training and support to allstaff and colleagues working in your section.
You will be required to communicatehighly complex information, often related to patient management and care, tocolleagues, healthcare staff and other organisations.
Preparing team rosters andarranging regular meetings within your section.
Candidateswill be HCPC registered biomedical scientists with demonstrable postregistration experience. Specific experience in the biochemical diagnosis andmonitoring of inherited metabolic disease and the use of LC-MS and GC-MSwould be advantageous but is not essential and full training will beprovided.

Seeattached job description for expectations for this role. In general, you willbe responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the biochemical geneticslab, alongside another band 7 BMS and support from clinical scientists, withresponsibility for ensuring that assays are completed in a timely manner. Youwill also have a role in troubleshooting problem equipment and ensuring highquality results. A large part of the role will involve annotation ofchromatograms for urine organic acid chromatograms and amino acids.
