Main duties of the job

Are you a dietitian with experience in allergy, looking to expand your experience, skills, and knowledge? We're seeking a 0.6 WTE Band 7 dietitian to work within our regional paediatric and adult allergy multidisciplinary teams at University Hospital Southampton to cover a 12-month fixed-term maternity vacancy. The role is primarily outpatient-focused, with occasional inpatient support for patients with food allergies. You will be supported by a Band 8a specialist allergy dietitian and will support a Band 5 (0.4 WTE) and Band 6 dietitian (0.2 WTE) in the paediatric team. Additionally, a 0.2 WTE Band 7 paediatric dermatology/allergy dietitian will work alongside you. The position is based at Southampton General Hospital.

Job responsibilities

What You'll Do:

  • Provide specialist dietary advice at paediatric and adult outpatient clinics as part of the allergy multidisciplinary teams, including face-to-face and virtual consultations.
  • Contribute to the quarterly MDT-led paediatric gastro-allergy clinic with specialist dietetic input.
  • Devise protocols and recipes for food challenges on adult and paediatric wards.
  • Attend weekly MDT meetings.
  • Offer bespoke advice and support for home reintroductions.
  • Supervise and support Band 5 and 6 allergy dietitians.
  • Contribute to dietetic student training programs.
  • Provide teaching and training on allergy to dietitians and other health professionals.
  • Lead service developments, audits, QI projects, and research initiatives.
  • Facilitate patient transition from paediatric to adult allergy clinics.
  • Request and interpret appropriate tests, including skin prick tests and allergy/nutritional blood tests.

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working in food allergy.
  • Qualified and registered with HCPC.
  • Knowledge of nutritional challenges faced by children, young people, and adults with food allergies.
  • Understanding of prevention and treatment of food allergy.
  • Ability to independently manage a busy, complex caseload.
  • Strong communication skills, empathetic nature, and holistic care approach.
  • Experience working within an MDT as a highly specialist dietitian and confidence in professional discussions.
  • Interest in working within a large allergy team and supervising junior dietitians.
