Job description

The post holder will.

  • Use technical equipment to safely draw blood from patients
  • Explain the process of drawing blood clearly to a patient
  • Reassure and calming patients who might be nervous or scared of the procedure
  • Apply dressings to the wound created by drawing blood
  • Register the blood and storing it in the correct environment
  • Send blood samples to testing laboratories
  • Maintain an organised and clean work area based on health and safety regulations and the guidelines of the Trust
  • Answer patient questions regarding collection techniques and offering additional resources on the collection process, if the patient requests them
  • Stock Keeping of supplies

The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of a Phlebotomist

  • Collecting Blood Samples Safely and accurately draw blood from patients using venepuncture
  • Verifying Patient Identity Confirm patient details (name, date of birth, NHS number, etc.) to ensure correct sample collection and labelling.
  • Preparing Patients Explain procedures, provide reassurance, and ensure the patient is comfortable before drawing blood.
  • Labeling and Handling Specimens Correctly label blood samples and ensure they are handled, stored, and transported according to protocol.
  • Maintaining Equipment and Supplies Ensure all phlebotomy equipment (needles, vacutainers, tourniquets, etc.) is clean, sterile, and ready for use.
  • Infection Control and Safety Compliance Follow infection control guidelines, wear appropriate PPE, and dispose of sharps and biohazard waste safely.
  • Data Entry and Record Keeping Accurately record details of the sample collection, patient data, and time of draw in both paper and digital formats.
  • Working with Healthcare Teams Communicate effectively with nurses, doctors, and lab technicians to ensure smooth workflow and accurate diagnostics.
  • Monitoring Patient Reactions Observe patients for adverse reactions (e.g., fainting, bleeding) during and after the procedure and respond appropriately.
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Stay updated with new techniques, safety protocols, and NHS or organisational policies related to phlebotomy.
