This post is focused on the implementation and delivery of Acute Diagnostic Oncology (ADO) pathways from external trusts by early intervention and support for patients with a new cancer diagnosis.

To provide professional and clinical leadership and expertise in acute oncology and upper GI cancers, acting as a resource for education and training.

To provide early input of specialist nursing care to oncology patients

Main duties of the job
  • Faster and better care of patients presenting with complications from radiotherapy, and systemic anti-cancer treatments. (early recognition, better treatment, early discharge).
  • Faster and better care of patients with complications of cancer (early recognition, better treatment, rapid referral back to appropriate speciality)
  • Improved access to appropriate oncology and relevant MDT.

Job responsibilities

This post is focused on the implementation and delivery of ADO/AOS and support for patients with an Upper GI cancer.

  • The post holder will play a key role in running the Acute Oncology Service and monitoring its impact using several key metrics.
  • Triage and assessment of Oncology Patients across Urgent and Emergency Care including SDEC, and patient admitted via UEC.
  • To work autonomously in organising a caseload. Ensuring this reflects the core components of the Clinical Nurse Specialist role, which involves high level of clinical decision making, advance clinical practice and providing consultations for healthcare professionals.
  • To raise awareness among health care staff of the educational needs of clients and family/carers, paying particular attention to the public and personal attitudes to cancer, and how these relate to political, social, economic, and ethical issues.

  • Registered Nurse Part 1,2 or relevant section of the register
  • Honours degree (Level 3/ Framework for Higher Education Qualification Level 6) in health-related subject
  • Evidence of Master's level learning or prepared to work towards
  • Evidence of continued Professional development
  • Substantial post registration experience with significant experience which will have been in the field of cancer.
  • Previous experience in a post involving clinical or managerial responsibility
  • Experience of teaching and development of teaching materials
  • Sound knowledge of Oncology aetiology and current treatments
  • Demonstrates understanding of good practice in patient/customer care
  • Management training course/ leadership course
  • Advanced Communication Skills Training (Connected)
  • Clinical Examination Skills training OSCE or equivalent
  • Previous CNS Experience
  • Experience of audit and research
  • Knowledge of audit and clinical governance
  • Teaching skills
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification or equivalent
