There has never been a more exciting time to join our pioneering and innovative Acute Medicine department. Applications are invited for enthusiastic Acute Medicine Consultants to join our expanding team managing patients within our in-patient and 'Same Day' units. We are looking to recruit substantive Consultants in Acute Medicine to support the expanding service; both full-time and part-time applications will be considered. The successful applicants will support the development of services and pathways, including our new Integrated Front Door and Medical Assessment Unit. This is an exciting time for the organization, and the successful candidate will play a key role in developing our Same Day Emergency Care offering and patient flow through Acute Medicine.

Our team values excellent relationships between clinical, nursing, and management staff, and we collaborate closely with supporting services such as the 'Front Door Team' (Physio/OT), Frailty Team, specialty hot clinics, and other clinical specialties.

Main duties of the job

We support our staff in maintaining specialist interests in other medical specialties. The role offers a dedicated session (1 PA) to pursue such interests.

Clinical Duties:

  • Multidisciplinary team working with regular MDT discussions
  • Providing evidence-based care in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Maintaining responsibility for patient care, including administrative duties (with secretarial support)
  • Developing subspecialty interests aligned with division needs and Trust strategy
  • Teaching, examination, accreditation duties, and contributing to medical education activities
  • Covering colleagues' leave as per Trust policies
  • Participating in clinical audits and ongoing medical education
  • Handling emergencies and unforeseen circumstances as required
  • Participating in an out-of-hours consultant rota, detailed in the job plan

Job responsibilities

The Trust encourages professional development through conference attendance, supervision, and leading improvement projects. Consultants are accountable through their Clinical Lead to the Associate Medical Director and are responsible for leading service improvements to enhance patient experience.

  • Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior Divisional Management Team member
  • Contribute to the leadership and development of services under the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director in line with Trust plans
  • Ensure effective communication and staff involvement across the division, supporting the Divisional Director's objectives
  • Collaborate with other divisions within the Trust
  • Assist in the cost-effective utilization of resources within budgets
  • Work within the Trust's Clinical Governance and Risk framework, developing policies and complying with procedures
  • Supervise junior staff and participate in teaching programs
  • Participate in incident investigations and risk management
  • Use NHS principles and STAR values to guide decisions

Clinical Governance and Audit

All consultants participate in clinical effectiveness activities, aiming to improve service quality and standards. They lead high standards of care and support the Clinical/Medical Leadership teams to:

  • Develop annual clinical governance and quality strategies
  • Produce quarterly reports for the Trust's Clinical Governance and Risk Committee
  • Ensure targets are met, including adherence to NICE guidelines, clinical audits, risk assessments, and research encouragement
  • Manage complaints effectively and contribute to workforce planning to maintain clinical excellence
