Overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Acute Medicine at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join a dynamic team of consultants as the service expands from investment.

We have up to 2.65 wte available and would support applicants who wish to work full time, part time or in a flexible pattern. We are interested in candidates who have a passion for Acute Medicine and may wish to maintain a specialist interest in another area. The Acute Medicine service sits within Medical Division, and as part of the Integrated Front Door Service, providing a responsive interface between primary and secondary care needs.

The service identifies and manages unwell patients requiring inpatient acute hospital treatment, while supporting primary care clinicians in managing others safely and effectively in the community.

Responsibilities

Main duties of the job include a rolling rota with 7 day cover for the Medical Short Stay (MSS) unit and daily ward rounds and post-take rounds in the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU). The team is expanding and refurbishing the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) area to provide a dedicated front door service for urgent assessment and diagnostics. Consultants are supported by specialty doctors, Medical Nurse Practitioners and nurses to assess and treat patients referred from primary care and others needing urgent assessment, investigations, but not necessarily admission. The service also manages patients referred by the ED and acute medical teams to enable safe and timely discharge. A dedicated phone line supports community partners with consultant advice and guidance to ensure patients receive the right care in the right place.

MAU has a target length of stay of up to 12–24 hours for initial assessment and management prior to discharge or admission. The RUH also benefits from a separate front door frailty service and an Older Persons Assessment Unit. MSS covers patients needing a 1 or 2-night stay under consultant-led ward rounds and MDT care.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCP or equivalent Full Registration with a licence to practice with the GMC
  • Entry on Specialist Register (or entry expected within six months of interview date)

Desirable

  • Higher Degree
Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCST in relevant specialty, including at least 18 months working within acute medical units and ambulatory care/SDEC
  • Ability to offer a senior opinion on a wide range of medical problems and take full clinical responsibility for unselected medical take
  • Ability to perform basic practical procedures relevant to acute medicine, including ascitic drains and LPs

Desirable

  • Sub-specialty expertise to complement the current interests of the unit
