The role offers broad exposure across the actuarial function and the opportunity to work closely with Underwriting, Risk, Finance, Data Science and Analytics and other teams across the business. The successful candidate will take ownership of defined analyses and processes, while working with senior members of the team on more complex assignments.

The ideal candidate will have a strong mathematical, statistical or scientific background, sound actuarial judgement and an interest in using data, coding and technology to improve actuarial insight. They will communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and be comfortable managing competing priorities.

Duties and Accountabilities

The role provides exposure across capital, reserving and pricing, alongside broader actuarial analysis and reporting. The responsibilities below illustrate the breadth of work the role may cover; the precise balance will reflect the successful candidate’s experience, strengths and development objectives, as well as the needs of the team.

Capital:
  • Support the maintenance, parameterisation, testing and running of the internal capital model.
  • Analyse model outputs and contribute to capital setting, business planning, risk appetite and reinsurance decisions.
  • Support the preparation of regulatory capital submissions and reporting for management and relevant committees.
  • Use the capital model to generate insight and support business decisions, including evaluating strategic options and understanding the key drivers of capital requirements.
Reserving:
  • Undertake quarterly reserving analyses, including actual versus expected analysis, assessment of uncertainty and clear explanation of key movements.
  • Support the Chief Actuary and senior members of the team in assessing profitability and reserve adequacy by class of business.
  • Prepare clear reserving outputs and supporting documentation for management, auditors and external actuaries.
Pricing:
  • Provide case pricing support and respond to pricing queries from underwriting teams.
  • Support the maintenance and development of technical pricing models and tools, including appropriate testing, documentation and change control.
  • Monitor pricing outputs and portfolio experience, working with Underwriting and Analytics to improve the insight available to the business.
Actuarial analysis and reporting:
  • Produce accurate and timely actuarial analysis and reporting for management, committees and regulatory returns.
  • Perform quarterly Solvency II Technical Provisions calculations, including data preparation, assumption review, analysis of movements and documentation of results.
  • Contribute to business planning, capital projections, risk appetite and profitability analysis.
  • Monitor relevant regulatory and market developments and support responses to regulators, auditors and other external stakeholders.
  • Ensure analyses, assumptions and outputs are appropriately validated, documented and subject to review.
Other:
  • Work closely with Risk, Underwriting, Finance, Data Science and Analytics on cross-functional analysis and projects.
  • Contribute to the development and use of actuarial dashboards, automation and analytical tools.
  • Maintain appropriate knowledge of actuarial and data science techniques and apply relevant developments to the role.
  • Support more junior team members through review, knowledge sharing and day-to-day guidance where appropriate.
  • Provide actuarial support to the business on an ad hoc basis and undertake specific project work as required.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • An appropriate actuarial professional qualification.
  • Relevant actuarial experience, preferably with a strong background in capital modelling.
  • Excellent numerical, statistical and analytical skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • The ability to exercise sound judgement, identify key issues and produce practical recommendations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and an interest in improving processes, analysis and reporting.
  • Good organisation and planning, with the ability to manage deadlines and prioritise effectively.
  • Clear written and face-to-face communication skills, including the ability to explain technical matters to non-technical stakeholders.
  • The confidence to build effective working relationships across the business and contribute constructively to discussions.
  • A strong academic background in a mathematical, statistical, scientific or related discipline.
  • Proficiency in relevant IT and analytical packages; experience of coding, data tools or actuarial modelling software would be advantageous.
