Graduate Actuarial Trainee – Reserving

Location: Manchester

Markerstudy is a leading provider of private insurance in the UK, insuring around 5% of the private cars on UK roads, 20% of commercial vehicles, and over 30% of motorcycles, with total premiums of circa £1.2b. The majority of business is written as the insurance pricing provider behind household names such as Co-op, Sainsbury’s, O2, Halifax, AA, Saga, and Lloyds Bank, among others. Markerstudy also has a large and growing direct presence in the market.

Role Overview

To provide actuarial and data analytical analysis to support the relevant department in delivering their objectives. To deliver assigned pieces of work as directed.

Responsibilities
  1. Support the Reserving team to ensure delivery against business plans.
  2. Undertake highly technical / complex analysis using actuarial techniques under the guidance of senior team members, providing quality assurance.
  3. Support in producing Reserving and other actuarial input into business planning, regulatory reporting, re-insurance placements, and M&A transactions.
  4. Contribute to the production of exhibits and presentations for internal and external stakeholders (Pricing, Underwriting, Claims, Reinsurers, and Regulators).
  5. Continuously improve the ‘actuarial control cycle’ by developing processes to enhance reserving accuracy and efficiency.
  6. Drive personal development and demonstrate a positive attitude.
  7. Ensure all actions consider customers, meet regulatory requirements (DPA, FCA, TCF), and adhere to company policies.
  8. Undertake other reasonable responsibilities and projects as instructed by the line manager.
Essential Skills
  • Graduate level position with up to two years' experience – no prior direct experience required.
  • Ability to perform accurate calculations under time pressure.
  • Interpret analytical outputs in context.
  • Communicate results clearly and concisely to senior team members.
  • High computer literacy, especially with Microsoft Office packages.
Desirable Skills
  • Effective time management.
  • Understanding of insurance products.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and self-awareness; proactive in seeking development opportunities.
